The Rasmus has just announced the third single potentially leading up to their album release on September 12th 2025. Their latest drop is titled Breaking These Chains and features Niko Vilhelm of The Blind Channel.
Breaking These Chains as the third single is a good choice, as it breaks the mold set by the two previous singles. This one features a more ambient soundscape ornated by hi-hats to guide the rhythm. The track opens with Lauri Ylonen’s vocals with a soaring melody topped with synths, already sounding a bit like their poppier material. We slowly get some rhythms and guitar chugs until the open and wide chorus hits. The track at this point is full of pop sensibilities but doesn’t ommit the ominous sound the band is usually known for, embracing both at once. Aki Hakala’s drumming on the track is commendable as it manages to keep a fast paced energy yet not delve into an ambiance breaking groove, preserving the large & open soundscape of the song. On the third act of the track, Vilhelm starts trading vocals with Ylonen for a beautiful exchange with harmonies, and a series of back & forth between the two vocalists. As a Finnish band it is cool to see The Rasmus collaborating with another artist from their country.
This track is their third single following Rest in Pieces & Creatures of Chaos. The former is a hard-hitting track blending soaring vocals & pop sensibilities, while the latter is an even heavier track boasting a heavy groove. These two singles benefit of the band’s signature epic choruses, but also really puts forward guitarist Emppu & bassist Eero Heinonen.

Many people are calling their upcoming album Weirdo a return to form, since the singles have elements from albums like Hide from the Sun & Dead Letters. However, it’s important to note that this album so far sounds slightly heavier than these when it comes to tone & mix, all the while embracing the pop sensibilities that they accumulated throughout their career. Their upcoming album WEIRDO releases on September 12th through Better Noise Music.
