After two decades of building a successful collaborative artistic career, THAO is entering a new chapter under her own name. Making her first release in six years, the new single “Fossils” arrives through Kill Rock Stars alongside a vibrant music video that reflects the song’s spirit of connection and optimism.
Contributions from co-producers Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner are joined by voices from THAO’s friends, collaborators, community members and even their children into a communal chorus, creating a collective expression that reinforces the song’s central theme: compassion and human connection.
The song examines how fear and self-preservation can quietly shape lives, leaving people emotionally isolated and resistant to vulnerability. At the same time it argues that people can actively choose a different path despite the effort required. Collaboration remains a defining element of THAO’s creative life, with projects with artists such as Mirah and Tune-Yards, appearances alongside Jad Abumrad, Robert Krulwich and Fred Armisen suggesting that more new music is on the way.
In the meantime, audiences can see her perform live as she joins Lord Huron on tour.
