Holly Humberstone premiered the title-track of her second studio album Cruel World, set to release on April 10 via Interscope Records. The record revolves around a mix of pain and pleasure, highlighting her amazing songwriting ability.
“Cruel World” is all about long-distance love and both the excitement and the suffering that comes with it and the video accompanying it was directed by Silken Weinberg and shot on a Victorian Theater set.
“Your perception of the world around you can be completely distorted without that one person in it. There’s no fun in going out solo when the only place you want to be is wherever they are. Loving someone that much is always going to hurt a little. This is the dichotomy of pain and pleasure. Love is so painful at its core and this is the throughline of my record. This is my favourite song I’ve ever written.”

The second studio album found its creative roots in childhood memories and trinkets like the Alice in Wonderland books and ballet shoes, Cruel World coming to life through daily studio sessions with collaborator Rob Milton. The record’s main focus is love in all its forms - romantic, platonic, feminine. The two previous singles, “Die Happy” and “To Love Somebody”, have touched on themes like devotion, desire and the way love can be both unsettling and grounding.
After the release of the album, Holly Humberstone is set to kick off the Cruel World North American Tour on June 3. The headline shows include venues like the Paradise Rock Club, the Varsity Theater and major festivals (Coachella, Governors Ball, Bonnaroo). Tickets are available for purchase here.
