Arm’s Length has now released their third and final single prior to their new album There’s A Whole World Out There, which releases on May 16. To close out the trilogy of singles, the Ontario-based band has released the fourth track on the album, “The Weight”. They have also released a supplemental music video, which you can watch here.
The video is a departure from the two previous videos, where they followed a story line. The two previous videos both displayed their section in what appeared to be a three video story. Perhaps we will see the end of the story line when the album officially releases. Regardless, the video was a nice reprieve from the heavy storyline the two previous videos followed, even though the message within the song is still a heavy hitter. Throughout the music video, we follow Arm’s Length hanging out and playing pool in the very beginning of the video. As it progresses, we see the band hanging out in the studio, recording what appears to be the very album they are promoting with this song. Throughout the video though, one thing is clear - everyone in the band is happy to be with each other. At the very end of the video, the camera pans to a whiteboard. Proudly displayed on it is the tracklisting for all the songs on the album. Finally, “The Weight” was checked off, showing to the audience that this was the last song that Arm’s Length recorded for this album.
Just like the rest of Arm’s Length’s songs, the underlying message of this one packs a punch. “The Weight” is a song written primarily about eating disorders and specifically relating the feeling of wanting to be physically small with longing to be insignificant in the grand scheme of the world. “Sometimes I want to be so small I disappear, and I think people can relate to that,” says vocalist and guitarist Allen Steinberg of the new song.
We all have our struggles, our own personal demons, but Steinberg continues to show his in such a raw and emotional light. Putting all of his thoughts out there for everyone to hear through his masterfully crafted songs, Steinberg might be the bravest person in the music scene right now. Already each of the three singles have made me tear up, I can only imagine what the rest of the album will bring. But I absolutely cannot wait until May 16 to hear the whole thing in full.
