Taylor Swift Brings The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore to the VMAs With Star-Studded Patient Zero Video
Taylor Swift has extended the life of her record-setting album The Life of a Showgirl with a four-song expansion, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, giving fans another chapter of the era while bringing one of its newest songs to the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
Released on September 25, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore adds four previously unreleased tracks to the original 12-song album: “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding,” and “Babylon.” The expanded edition brings the project to 16 songs in total. The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore is now available on streaming and her store has a digital download edition of the expanded release.
The new material came together after Taylor Swift returned to the studio with longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden. According to Swift, the original trip was intended as a celebration of the enormous response to The Life of a Showgirl, but having a studio nearby ultimately led to another round of songwriting.
Swift in a Instagram post described the four songs stating "About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made."
The centerpiece of the rollout has been “Patient Zero,” the first song announced from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. Rather than simply releasing the accompanying visual online, Taylor Swift brought the premiere to the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27 in Los Angeles, California. The official video made its world premiere during the ceremony, giving the new song one of the biggest possible platforms during release week.
Directed by Taylor Swift, the “Patient Zero” video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with cinematography from Academy Award-winning filmmaker Emmanuel Lubezki, whose credits include The Revenant, Birdman, and Gravity.
The visual leans into a darker cinematic atmosphere, with Swift appearing alongside Johnson and Farrell in a story involving a deteriorating relationship, death, and haunting imagery. Cara Delevingne also makes an appearance in the finished video.
The VMAs premiere also carried additional significance for Swift, who received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors during the ceremony. The new award recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and visual storytelling. Swift's night continued with another historic milestone. She received the Video of the Year award for “The Fate of Ophelia,” becoming the most awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history. She dedicated the honor to Dolly Parton, whom she referred to as the “ultimate showgirl.”
The four-song The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore expansion gives Taylor Swift another opportunity to explore the sound and themes established on the original album while expanding the project beyond its initial 12-track configuration.

The tracks appear as songs 13 through 16 on the expanded release.
“Patient Zero” serves as the project's lead song and visual centerpiece, while the remaining tracks give fans three additional pieces of music from the same creative period with Max Martin and Shellback.
The expansion arrives nearly one year after The Life of a Showgirl originally debuted on October 3, 2025. The album made an enormous commercial impact upon release, with Universal Music reporting a U.S. opening week of more than four million units and describing it as the biggest album debut in U.S. history.
