New York hardcore pioneers CRO-MAGS are officially kicking off the countdown to the 40th anniversary of their genre-defining debut. Today, the Harley Flanagan-led outfit unleashed a tough, updated rendition of "It's The Limit (2026)," offering the first taste of their highly anticipated upcoming album, "The Age of Quarrel: 40 Years of Quarrel." The revamped classic is scheduled to drop on November 13th via BLKIIBLK, but fans don't have to wait to experience the chaos. The track arrives alongside an intense new lyric video, which you can stream directly below.

To understand the weight of this release, we have to look back at the crucible that forged it. In the early 1980s, New York City was a far cry from the gentrified metropolis it is today. The Lower East Side was a gritty, dangerous place full of abandoned buildings, high crime, and a looming economic crisis. From this urban decay, New York Hardcore (NYHC) was born.

Four decades ago, CRO-MAGS defined the metal-punk crossover with their landmark debut. The intensity, influence, and groove of that record continue to resonate today, fueled by the band's enduring legacy as one of heavy music's most volatile and influential acts. Led by founding bassist and vocalist Harley Flanagan, who assumed frontman duties beginning with 1989's Best Wishes, the band is now bringing their history full circle with a celebration of the legendary album that started it all.

While the initial wave of punk was fading, a new generation of disillusioned youth raised the stakes. They took the lightning-fast tempo of Washington D.C. hardcore and injected it with the raw aggression of the NYC streets, heavy metal riffs, and a fierce, ride-or-die community ethic. The NYHC sound is distinguishable among other regions’ hardcore music in that it is simply like no other scene.

Standout contemporary hardcore guitarist Meg Mills joins the band for a guest appearance. She adds fresh fire to "It's The Limit," which is a foundational anthem born straight from that golden era. For Mills, collaborating with the legendary NYHC crew is a full-circle moment as a lifelong fan. In this band’s current iteration, we can see how hardcore was intended to run: the older teaching the newer and continuing the cycle of the hardcore scene leading by example while allowing for new ideas and styles to emerge.

Joining Flanagan for these fresh takes are original album guitarist Doug Holland and former CRO-MAGS and Suicidal Tendencies guitarist Rocky George. The lineup also features Zach Blair, Arthur Rizk, Meg Mills, and current band members Dominic Dibenedetto and Dave Sharpe. Drummer Greyson Nekrutman handled the percussion across all tracks. This collection reimagines classics like "Hard Times," "World Peace," and "Malfunction", while adding the 1985 demo era favorite "Everybody's Gonna Die." Produced and mixed by Arthur Rizk, who previously worked with Power Trip and Blood Incantation, the album pours new fuel on the fire for “old-heads” and new-comers alike.

The decision to revisit the material began during the making of the "Wired for Chaos" documentary. Several songs needed to be re-recorded for the film soundtrack because the original recordings could not be licensed. This barrier became a blessing in disguise and ultimately inspired Flanagan to re-record the entire album.

Beyond updating the music, this project is about righting the wrongs and handling business that was never squared away decades ago. Let's be real, the musicians who played on the 1986 debut got stiffed, never seeing a single dime in royalties or a proper sales accounting. Flanagan tried for years to get the original crew back in the room to re-record the tracks and take back what was theirs under the Copyright Reversion Act, but trying to coordinate that lineup was difficult and the legal action window was closed. Refusing to let the project stall, Flanagan pivoted to assemble a powerhouse squad of friends and heavy-hitting peers to finally give this legendary, scene-shaping masterpiece the proper tribute it deserves.
