Just in time for Fall, Royal & the Serpent has teamed up with Sumerian Comics to release a chilling cover of Leadbelly’s ‘Where Did You Sleep Last Night?’. The single is a part of a larger collaborative soundtrack of Sumerians new wave of American Psycho Comics. Prior to Royal & the Serpent, Ice Nine Kills, Reel Big Fish, Unlike Pluto, and Perturbator have lended their musical talents to build up this album since December of last year. It’s hard to say if Royal & the Serpents cover concludes the string of releases, but her track will surely make a lasting impact.
“Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” was a song first released in 1944 by Leadbelly, relying on just vocals and a sweet guitar to guide the song from beginning to end. The original has this feeling of questioning, the singer craving this genuine answer. Royal & the Serpent flips this emotion completely, seemingly becoming more accusatory or seeking vengeance for the situation. Instead of this folky blues song, Royal & the Serpent creates this eerie atmosphere that could leave listeners uneasy upon a first listen.

Although she’s shifted the aura of the song, it seems as if Royal & the Serpent wanted to pay homage to the original track by keeping the first verse dependent on her haunting vocals and acoustic guitar. By the time the keys hit and the climax builds, the cover transforms into a song that's undeniably Royal & the Serpent. The familiarity of the gritty, off putting, and theatrical elements come leaking in, reminiscent of her previous bodies of work, prior to the RAT TRAP era. The cover comes full circle towards the end as once the instrumental dissipates, listeners are left with Royal & the Serpents voice being airy and grainy, possibly a tribute to the recording quality Leadbelly had.
With this cover, Royal & the Serpent takes another step up the ladder of fame. From opening for Fall Out Boy in 2023, to having her first headliner tour last fall, to opening for Avril Lavigne this summer, and now collaborating with a franchise, Royal & the Serpent is bound to become a household name for alternative music fans.
