AUGUST 16TH - As someone that has really only covered nu-metal and black metal shows, I truly didn’t know what to expect when I stumbled across a gig underneath Rabbit Junk. In Spokane, Washington at The Big Dipper where all acts seem to cover, my mind was absolutely blown. With each act the energy of the room became palpable, every corner felt filled. The floor was taken over by dance and the colored lighting hit skin and everyone became the same. The young me dreamt of nights where I didn’t feel left out, like a watcher staring into a grand room full of wonder. It was at this show that not only did I feel included, but the energy almost was a familiar comfort; a show for weirdos.
The first opening act was Lost Masters, “Let’s Get Weird”. The screen covered flickers of horror movies, black and white films, action filled aura all while the lyrics became raw. “There is no Escape” the music sounding almost like you were inside a horror film, looking out of the window and feeling that intensity fill up your throat and ready to spit it out with a scream. It was an edge to start off the night.
The second act of the night was Skull Cultist, whose performance was phenomenal. Using props and bringing the crowd in closer. Joined by Lost Masters the two performed together bringing on a dark undertone to the night. “Rivethammer”, the energy of the crowd and the interaction became one of my favorite moments of the night. When you see the people on the dance floor having the time of their lives you can’t help but soak it all in.
The night ended with Rabbit Junk taking the stage, and the energy that had been building up throughout the night exploded into one final dance party. It was as if everyone knew everyone, no outsiders, no strangers. It was one of those shows that took you by a chokehold, everyone jumping around, singing, the room full of smiles and loud music that you could feel thudding through the floor. It wasn’t at all the type of music I listened to before, it certainly is now. Something about that dance floor became inspiring and a beautiful spectacle, as if those crowd goers were part of the show.
Rabbit Junk performed with such bright colors of lights along with music that just filled you up. “IDONTGIVEA***K” by far had to be one of the best but the set went on and on until everyone was drenched in sweat and everyone was out of breath. Between the amazing performance and fantastic energy by both the crowd and the bands it was an experience I won’t soon ever forget. In Spokane the music takes all types of turns, The Big Dipper showcasing all kinds of talent, both old and raw. Rabbit Junk was something I don’t think I could ever actually describe, life changing in fact. By the time I left the venue I had met so many wonderful people and I was able to dive into a different world I never knew I’d enjoy.
If you love the world of hackers, and the feel of cyber music mixed with I don’t give a flying fuck what you think punk - then I suggest giving them a listen. Maybe even next time they are in your area you’ll be able to have the dance party of your life. Weirdos unite.
