Nova Riot Shares Brand New Track 'Breaking Free'

Coming out of Oklahoma is Nova Riot, a heavy rock and pop punk band who’s impossible to ignore. The band is led by Nova, who brings these no-holds-barred vocals that compliment PJ’s riff-driven songwriting. They bring a gritty edge to the familiar genre, with their music screaming rebellion, energy, and carrying an unapologetic attitude. 

On February 14th, Nova Riot released their very first single Breaking Free. The track is vicious, nearly an anthem of sorts. Nova carries these commanding vocals throughout the entire track with their emotions being further highlighted by the track's heavy-hitting drums and explosive guitar. Breaking Free inspires the listener to take control of their own path in life and “break free” from what may be constraining them. This symbolism behind the Nova Riots own experiences of learning how to gain independence. The band shared this quote about the writing process behind the song…

"When I wrote the lyrics to "breaking free" I was leaving a very toxic relationship that had a push and pull dynamic. This song is about breaking free from the cycle. It also captures the anger you feel when forced to leave someone you love, but isn't good for you. I hope anyone who is going through this feels more powerful when listening to this song." 

Alongside the single, Nova Riot has released a music video for Breaking Free. The visualiser creates this horror-driven atmosphere, even though the video is ultimately about gaining back control and smashing previous obstacles. Even with this underlying meaning, the video is not a difficult watch, instead viewers are drawn in with colourful and bold lighting alongside these elaborate dynamic shots. There's this perfect blend between camp and cinema behind the idea, perfectly establishing Nova Riot as a band, and giving insight on how their future as a band will be.

Nova Riot About The Breaking Free Music Video: "I can't pinpoint exactly when the concept for the "Breaking Free" music video came to me, but I'm sure it was during one of those intense deep thought sessions while in Smokelahoma. The vision of Nova breaking free from a traumatic event, set against a cinematic backdrop, just clicked. We decided on a horror theme, with Nova in a straightjacket and the band dressed as possessed male nurses along with a couple of models dressed as nurses. Shooting in a run-down nursing home with a few well-placed props gave the video that perfect campy B-flick feel. In the end, we created a really cool horror-themed music video that perfectly captures the raw emotion of the song."
