If you watched Troye Sivan's ‘One of Your Girls music video in October 2023 and thought, “Wow, I wish this video was filled with Masc Lesbians instead,” singer-songwriter Lucy Dacus just released the music video for you.

Dacus released her third single on February 10th titled ‘Best Guess’ off her upcoming album Forever Is A Feeling. For diehard Dacus fans, this wouldn’t be the first time they’ve heard the track. Back in October, Dacus performed ‘Best Guess’ live in New York when she opened for Boygenius bandmate and long-time friend, Julien Baker on her fall headliner. Since then, clips of the song have been circulating around the internet with no true confirmation of the release.
In early January 2025, Dacus confirmed the track's title of ‘Best Guess’ and teased a short snippet of the first verse on TikTok. Alongside the snippet, Dacus hand wrote a casting call, requesting fans who are “smooth or sauve (or can pretend to be)” and for “hot masc(s)” to use her sound for a chance to be a part of the ‘Best Guess’ music video. On Sunday, February 9th, Lucy Dacus posted on Instagram a series of stills from the music video, announcing that fans would finally have ‘Best Guess’ at 1:30 Eastern Time the following day.
‘Best Guess’ is a love song to its very core, focusing on the delicacies of an intimate relationship. Rather than talking about grand gestures, the small domestic moments of “Zipping Your Dress” and “Tracing your tan lines” are highlighted, reminding listeners of the simple pleasures. These themes are accompanied by the emotionally weighted lyrics of “You were my best friend before you were… my best guess at the future” and “If this doesn’t work out, I would lose my mind” displaying Dacus’ unbridled desire for her muse. ‘Best Guess’ reflects the feelings of yearning and desperation that is present within relationships, regardless of how long you have been together.
Queer people everywhere are swooning over the “Hot Mascs’ featured in the ‘Best Guess’ music video. Dacus, who is the video’s director, adorned her cast in a range of different suits, positioned them in solid colour rooms, and gave them a range of roles within the video. Some are featured with posing close-ups, others boxing, arm wrestling, playing poker and pool, lifting weights, and playing darts. Dacus appears to be an observer of these activities- minus her poker win- as although she is dressed to fit in with the cast, she seems to prefer watching in admiration. I can’t blame her though, as I would be in complete awe if I were in Dacus’ position.
Some notable faces who made the ‘Best Guess’ cut are actress Cara Delevigne, musician Towa Bird and Naomi McPherson of MUNA and internet personality Mattie Westbrouck. This is only a small portion of Dacus’ 18-person cast, as she features a range of different mascs throughout the course of the video. Dacus showcases masc’s beyond the stereotype, choosing not to just focus on masculine cis women, but other Masculine people who may be gender non-conforming, those who have had top surgery, those who have longer hair, and a range of body types. In the media, being queer and masculine tends to fall into a specific visual stereotype, but Dacus shatters these former expectations, hopefully allowing everyone to find a masc that aligns with them.
