Lucy Dacus announces her Renaissance-esc Fourth Studio Album Forever Is A Feeling

Beloved singer-songwriter and boygenius band member Lucy Dacus has blessed her fans with a trifecta of new content to kick off her new era. She started by releasing her lead single ‘Ankles’, which was accompanied by a second surprise single ‘Limerence’. This was then followed by announcing her fourth album Forever is a Feeling, and finally, to pair with the release of new music, a Spring North American Tour with her good friends, Katie Gavin and Jasmine.4.T. Although she’s been teasing the aesthetics of her new album since November of 2024, the Forever is a Feeling era has hit fans like a ton of bricks, so let's break it down.

‘Ankles’ is Dacus’ lead single off Forever is a Feeling. It's a mix of sultry and sweet, but ultimately is about “wanting something you can’t have, particularly someone you can’t have” Dacus’ said within an interview for Dazed. The track has the brash contrast of erotic themes paired with serine domestic life, especially within the chorus where Dacus starts with “Pull me by the ankles to the edge of the bed, and take me like you do in your dreams” and ending with “You are gonna make mе team, gonna ask me how did I sleep”. This track is for the horny lovergirls, the yearners who want all elements of

love.

The lead single was paired with a music video that features Dacus’ as a princess who’s ran away from her painting and Havana Rose Liu- best known from the film Bottoms, as a security guard trying to return her. The two run through the streets of Paris, with Liu slowly falling in love with an ignorant but blissful Dacus before she’s trapped back inside her frame. The music video is a strange frankenstein of ‘Night at the Museum’ and the novel  ‘Portrait of a Lady’, which Dacus was reading upon meeting bandmate Julien Baker years ago. Dacus honoured the ‘Ankles’ music video by wearing her gown on Jimmy Fallon, where she performed the song live.

‘Limerence’ changes the tune for the album. Instead of being somewhat of a modern day bard song, it calls upon a grand piano and strings, pairing them with Dacus’ detrimental vocals. Initially, the track comes off as a story, as Dacus’ paints the picture of the room she is in, describing the people and then herself. Immediately after, with a low note of the piano, she drops the devastating lyrics  “I'm thinking about breaking your heart someday soon. And if I do, I'll be breaking mine too”. ‘Limerence ' reveals itself to be a rather tragic song about loving someone so deeply, but being unable to confess that feeling to them, eventually choosing to submit to staying quiet. Dacus revealed on her Instagram story that  it was a last minute call to put this song out, saying “I personally find it hard to listen to but I am very proud of it.”

Both singles are a part of Dacus’ fourth album Forever is a Feeling. From the album cover alone, we can see somewhat of a renaissance or classical element shine through from the aesthetic. The cover is a commissioned oil painting from Will St. John of Dacus as this goddess figure trapped within a frame, looking down at this smaller humanoid being. This theme of paintings, or framed photos, is consistently seen throughout all the promotional, giving viewers the feeling of this museum being created purely of Dacus’ work. Apart from ‘Ankles’ and ‘Limerence’, Forever is a Feeling is allegedly going to feature some tracks Dacus teased during Julien Bakers shows this fall, as well as contributions from Baker directly, alongside Phoebe Bridgers, Hozier, Madison Cunningham among others. All 13 tracks will be released on March 28th.

To bring all these elements together, Lucy Dacus is taking her album on tour in April and May of this year. She is playing 21 shows across North America, starting in Philadelphia on April 16th and ending May 15th at the Greek Theatre. Accompanying Dacus is Katie Gavin, who is a solo artist and the lead singer of band Muna as well as Jasmine.4.T, who recently put out an album that Dacus helped produce. Tickets for this tour are on sale this Friday January 24th, and considering dates are selling out in Presale, do not dabble on getting tickets.
