Laura Jane Grace is the most notable known as the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist in the punk rock band Against Me!. What few people may know, is that Grace has been releasing her own solo music, experimental punk projects Stay Alive (2020) and Hole In My Head (2024). On February 11th, Laura Jane Grace in the Trauma Topes released their new single Your God (God’s Dick) via Polyvinyl Record Co.
The Trauma Topes consist of Grace’s wife, Paris Campbell Grace on vocals, and Athens, Greece-based musicians Jacopo Fokas on bass and Orestis Lagadinos on drums. Your God (God’s Dick) was written in Summer 2024 during a songwriting fellowship retreat in Greece. The writing location brought inspiration to the instruments used to produce the track, as Grace played a Baglama, a lute string instrument that has been associated throughout history with Rebetiko, a style of Greek protest music.
Your God (God’s Dick) is a hilarious and witty track that spins religious devotiveness on its head. It blends together a use of religious phrases and contexts with terribly sexual and not safe for work (NSFW) elements. It's been credited as a “should-be-hit that feels like a brazen test of the new right’s alleged devotion to free speech”.
The intro of the track is sung like a choir, with the opening line being: “Does your god have a big fat dick? Cause it feels like he’s fucking me.” The vulgarity continues with lines like “Does he shoot wads of honey and cum twice on Easter Sunday” alongside “Can he cum a shotgun blast and shoot salvation up your ass”, as well as plenty of others that you’ll need to hear from Grace herself. Although this track would scandalize the church and have people calling their pastors to book a confessional time, Your God (God’s Dick) is fun, bold, and exactly what we need from a Punk icon as big as Laura Jane Grace.
Alongside this release, Laura Jane Grace announced that she would be going on tour as Laura Jane Grace & The Mississippi Medicals this year. She’ll be playing her own stream of shows throughout April before supporting Murder By Death in June and July.
