Houston, TX's own De'Wayne just released a brand new rock'nroll single, "highway robbery" and it is a loud, proud, anthemic track invoking the glam funk trailblazers that came before him like Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Nina Simone, Parliament Funkadelic, and more. This new era for him shows that he's leveled up as a proud Black man, a son, friend, leader, an artist, and a lover. Kicking off the track with a choir of voices proclaiming "oh This is a Highway Robbery!" immediately sets the tone that De'Wayne is not playing games and hearing him slip in and out of his buttery smooth falsetto proves he's not a one trick pony.
Clad in a black studded leather jacket and matching leather bell bottoms, wielding his electric guitar, De'Wayne proclaims his lover stole his heart, bewitched his mind, body, and soul; and he's totally fine with it! The video sees him putting his human duality at center stage and harnessing the divine feminine through his masculinity. He's writhing and dancing on the bed of a red, white, and blue painted pickup truck, and commanding his charisma with his band in the dusty desert junkyard, lit up by KC lights with no shortage of soul, sex, sweat, and style.
When asked about the new single, De'Wayne shared, "the title was inspired by a heartfelt connection with my partner. She didn't literally steal my heart - but I left the door wide open for it. I wrote this song as a poem first, and it evolved into this rock'n'roll soul influence. It feels good to be so locked in!"
De'Wayne is one of those once in a lifetime artists who can shapeshift with the best of them, including collaborating with fellow Houstonites Waterparks, Aussie mates Chase Atlantic, and pop punk icons Good Charlotte. He was also featured on a protest track released in 2020 with Anti-Flag and Rage Against The Machine's legendary guitarist Tom Morello which is a huge honor and should be all the convincing you need to hop on the De'Wayne train!
De'Wayne has always been an icon, and this new era is promising to propel him into the stratosphere of epic proportions. He's not afraid to take a risk with his music or personal style, and even channels late 90s Lenny Kravitz and the Ohio Players. It gives De'Wayne the clear advantage and ability to hook his audience and keep them coming back to see what he comes up with next.
I've been lucky enough to catch De'Wayne a few times in the past and I can confidently say this man is one of my favorite rising stars. He's a natural born performer and I can't wait to see what's next for him!
