On the 20th of February, Mothica, also known as McKenzie Ellis, released her new EP ‘Somewhere In Between’ via Sharptone Records, sporting a humble 5 tracks, this EP packs a punch for any listener. On the run up to the EP release, Mothica presented us with two previews, in the form of the songs ‘Evergreen Misery’ and ‘Save Your Roses’.

Kicking off the EP, we have ‘Evergreen Misery’, which in the music video starts off in an elevator, and then kicks rolls into a nice slow melodic intro with Mothica walking around an empty office. Moments later the powerful chorus of the song kicks in with a chunky guitar riff before winding down to its calm demeanour. The song feels bipolar, with little indication of when the song is going to kick off again which is amazing as it leaves you on the edge of your seat. From soft vocals to a disgustingly heavy breakdown, this song has it all.

The next song up on the ep, ‘WEAPON’ starts off much the same but has a much softer feel as the song gets under way, making you feel almost uneasy, the song feels like it hold a heavy emotional factor to it which is backed up with an underlying melodic guitar underneath the already angry guitar, that later lets loose into yet another nasty breakdown.

The 3rd song of the EP comes by the name of ‘Save Your Roses’, which unlike the two previous songs, kicks off immediately, making you feel like you have nearly interrupted something.  With the setting of this music video being the same as ‘Evergreen Misery’ we are welcomed to some shots of the whole band now, a more performance style video with some story snippets sprinkled throughout. The song is packed with energy and really keeps you wanting more.

Thankfully, the penultimate song of the EP, ‘BULLET’, does just that with a similar feeling to the EP opener, it comes with some electronic elements that makes the song sound very animated. Listening to the lyrics deeply of this song they feel hopeless, quoting “I’d crawl to the light but, the darkness always winsis a stark reminder of her past and what she has now overcome.

The 5th and final track of the EP, self titled ‘Somewhere In Between’, is also the 3rd music video we are treated to off of the EP. This song is the title track for a reason, the lyrics are beautifully written, with some to quote being “Like a moth to the flame, heavy the rot in my veins” and “Like a cut that never bleeds, My heavy heart is killing me, got a hunger I could never feed” These lyrics represent the previous addictions that McKenzie battled, and how she felt during that time.

All in all, this EP is very well crafted and has such an amazing story behind it. To go along with it, each music video tells a story and has amazing visuals to go along with it. I can’t wait to see more from Mothica in the future as she has a very bright future ahead of her!
