Do You Wanna Get “High Fashion” With Addison Rae?

From a scream on the remix of Charlixcx’s hit ‘Von Dutch’, to quenching everyone's thirst with ‘Diet Pepsi’, and finally taking a dip in the ocean with ‘Aquamarine’, Addison Rae has been the It Girl ‘2 Die For’. Over the last year, the former TikTok star has been reinventing herself, shedding her teenage skin and morphing into a digital icon who is focused on her music career and simply “living that life”. This new version of Rae is campy, sensual, and most of all high fashion, simply checking all the boxes to become the internet's next Pop Princess.

After a string of brilliantly placed promotional teasers, and an Instagram caption telling us “Don’t be lonely on Valentine’s Day… get High Fashion!”, Rae released her third single, High Fashion. The track is both sleazy and sexy, with Rae’s breathy vocals pairing perfectly with the simplistic beats and waving synths. The listening experience is reminiscent of a slow moment in a club, where the lights may still be blaring, but you’re left in your own world, maybe dancing with an attractive stranger who you’ll forget about by the time you leave. If you’re sober, listening to “High Fashion” makes you feel as if you’re drunk in your best outfit. Some people may not get this illusion upon first listening, but the second time around, you’ll start to feel the desire to be High Fashion.

Alongside the single, Rae released an accompanying music video. She was truly looking camp straight in the eye with her vision for this video. The cinematography is gorgeous, with the mixture of slow and quick camera movements matching the essence of the song personally. Rae is featured throughout the entire video in a range of different locations and outfits. In some, she is indulging in powdered sugar and smoke to represent the idea of drug usage, despite saying “I don't need your drugs”. As much as Rae is implying the usage of these drugs, the non-conventional way she does so forces watchers to focus on her, her body's movements, and of course her outfits.

In other scenes, Rae is featured in this gorgeous walk-in closet covered in glitter and surrounded by shoes, boas, and pearls. These shots tend to be my personal favourite as they emulate my personal vision of “High Fashion” and luxury clothing in general. Rae also is featured in some stunning outdoor shots, both in a Dorthy-esc outfit, a wet embellished bikini, and surrounded by a live fire. Although none of these clips align with a real story, lacking the cohesive nature that her former videos have had, the fact the video and Rae herself are so stunning completely erases my critiques in that category. It’s effortless beauty, and if you aren’t a fan, well in Addison’s words “Stay maddddddd. Get High Fashion.”

Rae told Apple Music that High Fashion, alongside ‘Aquamarine’ and ‘Diet Pepsi’, will be a part of her debut nine-track album released later this year. With high expectations from the community and heavy endorsements from her musical peers, there's a lot of pressure on Rae’s rebrand to be successful. Honestly speaking, regardless of the tangible success of her upcoming era, I believe Rae’s behaviour and influence will be far too iconic, landing her the spot as a “main pop girl”.
