Tate Mcrae’s new album, 'So Close To What', is a fantastic picture of her growing pop scene. Going into So Close To What, I was skeptical. Tate McRae always makes amazing songs, but I wasn’t sure if this album would top Think Later. I had been obsessed with Think Later for months, listening to it every day, so my expectations were very very high. The album opens with "Miss Possessive". It starts with a voice, allegedly Sydney Sweeney’s, saying, “Keep your hands off my man.” The song is about being possessive of her boyfriend, and wanting everyone to stay away from him. It has a super upbeat tone and immediately got stuck in my head.
Next is "2 Hands", a song that was already released as a single, so I had listened to it before. Then comes "Revolving Door", where she sings about returning to the same toxic relationship over and over, like a revolving door. It has that basic pop sound, but Tate’s voice makes it so good. Track 4 is "bloodonmyhands", featuring Flo Milli. I’m a big fan of Flo Milli, so this collaboration is everything to me. Tate sings the first few verses, and then Flo Milli comes in with her signature rap style. Their sounds blend so well together, making it a song that stays stuck in your head all day.
Tracks 5, 6, and 7 are "Dear God", "Purple Lace Bra", and "Sports Car". I immediately fell in love with Purple Lace Bra. At first, it seems simple with basic lyrics, but if you really think about it, there’s a deeper meaning. Plus, it’s upbeat and catchy, so even if you aren’t someone who pays attention to lyrics, it’s still a great song.
Track 8, "Signs", is one of the more introspective songs on the album, and it still has her signature pop sound. Track 9, "I Know Love", features The Kid LAROI. I was surprised that she did a collaboration with her boyfriend, but it was really good. Their personal music styles are so different, but this song blends both of their voices together so well.
Track 10, 11, 12, and 13 are called “Like I do,” “Its Ok, Im Ok,” “No I’m not in love,” and “Means I care". These are the kind of songs that get stuck in your head instantly. Right after you finish listening, you just want to turn it right back on. Some of the lyrics in these songs are emotional and vulnerable, but the production makes it upbeat, so it adds a bittersweet feeling.
"Greenlight" and "Nostalgia" are my absolute favorites. Greenlight has such a unique sound. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard from her before. The energy is addicting, and it’s one of those songs you can scream in the car. Nostalgia is so sad and relatable. Its the kind of song that makes you sit and reflect on everything. The way she captures the feeling of missing something you can’t get back is heartbreaking.
Overall, this album is fantastic. I honestly think it tops Think Later (although both are amazing, and I’m still obsessed with that one too). I can’t wait to have this on repeat and see what she writes next.
