On November 22, 2024, a new and more compelling chapter in the Swedish progressive heavy metal band Opeth was launched with the release of their new album “The Last Will and Testament.” Their steady progress and development has culminated with their 14th studio release, an album which captures and records the metal band’s core essence while also integrating their latest attempts at rock fusing in elements of classical music making it a very rich album experience “The Last Will and Testament”.
The story line of the album is anchored around a father’s reading of his will and more specifically the conflicts and hidden truths that the reading reveals within the family. It contains seven paragraphs (tracks) and a final balled titled ‘A Story Never Told’. This form allows for an album with a strong story line similar to many of Opeth’s previous albums including Ghost Reveries only that this one is more elaborate and theatrical.
The Last Will and Testament album track "Paragraph 5" is the fastest growing and richest track on the album featuring Mikael Åkerfeldt’s long lost growling. The track, which is the fifth on the album incorporates modern yet familiar complex sounds of the band that had been dormant for a few years and teamed with Aykerfeldt vocals makes a masterpiece.
And on the contrary, a section that is accompanied with a string arrangement, instrumentation and vocals praise the ancient Spanish-romantic clashes along passages of the contemporary flute. On the other hand the last track on the album ‘A Story Never Told’ is a breath of sweet fresh air as it is not only completely different from the rest of the album but its romance is unforgettable as it a blend of melancholic music and a masterpiece of a guitar solo done by Fredrik Åkesson.
The materiel is very well produced in a way to keep it raw but definitely does not focus on polishing up too much. It’s also the first album featuring drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, who precision improves the record’s ever-changing rhythms and numerous atmospheres, although some of the reviewers remarked that he is not original enough to be compared with the past members.
The last will and the testament brings forth the feeling of nostalgia while bringing in younger generations of Opeth fans with the help of combining a bunch of their different eras together. It is a nice work of art but it is a little bit challenging to appreciate on the first attempt something so plentiful in its construction. Critics have lauded the record’s synthesis of violence and harmony with some saying it is the best the group has ever produced and others still speaking highly of it for how easy it is to listen to and the consistent themes in the album.
For the Opeth hardcore fans and the ones who took pleasure to watch the style change, The Last Will and the Testament works as a beautiful experience. The story line, creativity and the risks taken prettily much work as the perfect recipe for the record to be one of the best of the year. If you have followed them for a long time or have just listened to them the first time, this record is definitely a treat with all the changes Opeth brings in.
