Los Angeles singer, songwriter, performer, and visual artist Mothica (McKenzie Ellis) has released her new EP, Somewhere In Between (mothicorp’s lofi breakroom beats), on July 4, 2026. Available now on digital streaming platforms, the project reimagines the five songs from her Somewhere In Between EP as dreamy, atmospheric lofi versions created alongside producer Nathan Miller (Icarus Moth) at Mothicorp Studios.

Fans can also enjoy a full set of animated visualizers, with artwork by Madison Schubert and animation from Chris Klumpp.

Speaking about the release, McKenzie Ellis shared that Somewhere In Between has always represented an emotional space for her. Reworking the songs into lofi versions felt like a natural next step, transforming them into tracks that feel nostalgic, softer, and almost dreamlike. She also revealed that the EP will receive a special cassette edition featuring artwork designed by Madison Schubert, scheduled for release in mid-July 2026.

Earlier this year, February 2026 marked the arrival of Mothica's Somewhere In Between EP, introducing a heavier and more guitar-driven direction with songs including "WEAPON," "Save Your Roses," and "Evergreen Misery." The release received praise from outlets including Kerrang!, Hit Parader, Ghost Cult, CBC Music, Metal Anarchy, and Spotify's All New Metal playlist. She also followed the EP with a remix collaboration alongside HEALTH.

Throughout her career, Mothica has built a reputation for writing deeply personal songs inspired by her own experiences. Tracks such as "forever fifteen," which reflects on surviving a suicide attempt at age 15, and "Buzzkill," addressing abuse by a youth pastor, have resonated with listeners around the world. Her music has earned hundreds of millions of streams, while 2020's VICES reached the Billboard charts and climbed to No. 2 on the iTunes Pop chart. She has also toured alongside artists including Coheed & Cambria and Halestorm.

The inspiration behind her latest music came after a difficult period in 2024, when Ellis recognized she had relapsed into addiction while relying on medication to cope with a severe fear of flying. During a European tour, she made the decision to cancel her first headlining tour and enter rehabilitation. The experience ultimately became the creative spark behind the heavier sound of Somewhere In Between, allowing her to channel frustration, recovery, and self-reflection into a more aggressive style while blending pop melodies with rock and metal influences.

Returning to sobriety also encouraged her to experiment musically. Drawing inspiration from heavier guitars, cinematic synths, and more powerful vocal performances, she collaborated with producers Elliot Polokoff, Curt Martin, Zach Jones, and contributed her own co-production to craft a sound that merges dark pop, rock, and metal while remaining true to her artistic identity.
