Hot Mulligan turned up the volume by teaming up with Cory Castro of Free Throw for their second single, Island in the Sun, in support of their fourth full-length album, The Sound a Body Makes When It’s Still. Both songs that have been released in support of this album are reminiscent of their earlier work, carrying the same upbeat energy woven within their midwest emo sound. This album is scheduled to be released on August 22nd. Additionally, Hot Mulligan will be joining Pierce the Veil on their Europe and UK tour this September.
Island in the Sun delves into self-destruction in relation to alcohol abuse; a common theme among Hot Mulligan’s work. Lines such as “The only way I learned to cope with mistakes / Drinking more for each new one I’ve made”, immerse the listener in the yearning to escape self-awareness, even if it is what prevents those mistakes.
The music video is reminiscent of nostalgic moments shared with their band, invoking the regret of being trapped in addiction within the listener. The music video is a combination of live footage and behind-the-scenes moments. This video effectively mirrors the emotional energy that we see represented within the song.
