Devolver Release Cathartic New Album “Non Compos Mentis”

ree

Non Compos Mentis, a full length album by Canadian metalcore outfit Devolver, has been released August 22nd, 2025. The album combines the technicality of early 2000s metalcore, with the sweep of melodic death metal. The album was written by Devin Babcock and Jayde Penner, delivering a heavily emotional sound that drives the album, undoubtedly their most ambitious to date.

Produced by Mark Lewis, an accredited producer, having produced influential bands such as Whitechapel, Trivium, and Devildriver; bringing Devolver into new, and heavier territory. Listen to the album here

The band says in regard to the release: “We think Non Compos Mentis will be embraced by fans of our first album; it’s a huge evolution of our sound. Our first album was a passion project for Devin, but this record is what the five of us sound like collaborating as a unit. The razor-sharp production from Mark Lewis helped us push this thing over the edge, into something we think people will grab onto. We want to give people the feeling we felt when we first heard our favorite bands, and the albums that made us fall in love with music."

The name, Non Compos Mentis is inspired by a haunting true story, of an 1805 murder of guitarist Devin Babcock’s ancestor, Amos Babcock, who murdered his own sister. The album artwork depicts the aftermath of the grisly murder, showing Amos standing bloody in the snow, an image as dissonant as the music itself.
