On July 11th, Conan Gray broke the hearts of fans everywhere with his latest single ‘Vodka Cranberry’ off his upcoming album Wishbone, set to release on August 15th, 2025.
Unlike Gray’s previous single, ‘This Song’, which was a dedicated love song that captures all the small, nearly unnoticed moments of falling in love with someone, ‘Vodka Cranberry’ does a complete 180, being a track that is built to send listeners into a soul-crushing spiral. While Gray still focuses on these very particular moments within a relationship, everything he mentions is far less endearing, instead bringing listeners into this small period that exists right before a breakup, where you begin to pinpoint everything that has or is going wrong.
In the chorus, Gray pleads, “Speak up, I know you hate me,” completely begging his partner to just be honest. In the end, it appears Gray’s efforts are futile, with him saying, “If you won’t end things, then I will”, ultimately making this executive decision to end the relationship, as even though there’s an aggressive amount of turmoil, his partner won’t step away from whatever they have, regardless of the apparent turmoil.
To accompany the single, Gray expands the Wishbone cinematic universe with yet another music video. ‘Vodka Cranberry’ picks up where Gray and his co-star, Corey Fogelmanis, left off, with Wilson (Gray) and Brando (Fogelmanis) learning how to continue their relationship in small-town Texas. While I don’t want to spoil the music video for anyone who’s not yet seen it, I will say that the two capture ‘Vodka Cranberry’’s thematic essence perfectly, with viewers watching the couple's relationship fall apart in real time.
The video's director, Danica Kleinknecht, deserves some recognition for her work, as the way the scenes are sandwiched together keeps watchers perfectly on the edge of their seats, as we’re never quite sure how the relationship is going to evolve. There’s a push and pull between ‘good’ and ‘bad’, where you want to root for the couple, yet, deep down, you know they’ve been doomed from the very beginning. Regardless of the outcome, this music video is a must-watch, but be sure you have some tissues beside you just in case.
