Void of Vision's new single "Empty", released via UNFD today, is raw, ferocious and oozing with caustic dexterity. With "Empty," the quartet returns to form after transforming itself with 2023's razor-sharp single "Angel Of Darkness." With jagged riffs, voracious vocals, and a fiery breakdown, "Empty" brings together the journey that frontman Jack Bergin has taken behind the scenes in recent years.
Throughout their ten years in the modern heavy scene, Melbourne's Void Of Vision have consistently provided innovative and sonically compelling music. Among many achievements, Void Of Vision performed with Slipknot, Parkway Drive, Megadeth and more at Australia's first Knotfest, and collaborated with PhaseOne, a metal-meets-electronic DJ. As a complete album, Void Of Vision released the amalgamated CHRONICLES series, combining previously standalone EPs LUST, HEAVEN, and UNDERWORLD into a captivating snapshot of the band's relentless inventive history.
"We'd just completed our first run of shows back since I had surgery following a brain AVM rupture in April, which left me facing mixed emotions I didn't expect. On one hand, we were playing our largest ever headline shows to date and selling them all out, and on the other, I was facing the fear of getting up on stage every night risking another potential rupture every set I played... Performing under the 'Angel Of Darkness' persona for the single campaign, I'd get up on stage and play it down from the usual high energy show we're known for, leaving every second of gratitude or appreciation to be communicated by a backing track in between songs to communicate with the audience. A protective measure sure, yet I felt vapid and far from the engaging stage persona that had led us to playing these bigger stages in the first place. We were at the peak of our career and I felt nothing but imposter syndrome up where I usually feel most at home."
A new future was heralded by the solo single "Angel Of Darkness" in 2023, following the release of Broken // Bones in 2014, Children of Chrome in 2016, Disturbia in 2017, Hyperdaze in 2019, and CHRONICLES in 2023. During the single's campaign, the titular Angel Of Darkness acted as the band's representative, an alt metal rager with equal amounts of searing heaviness and pulsing pop.
Void of Vision's "Empty", kicks off with Bergin's muffled clean vocals then accompanied by aggressive guitar riffs and relentless drumming capture the listener's attention with its thunderous instrumentation. As soon as the song begins, the audience is plunged into a maelstrom of sound that mirrors the tumultuous emotions the song explores. "Empty" oscillates between moments of blistering intensity and haunting restraint, which is one of its most striking aspects. With this contrast, the song's emotional impact resonates at a deeper level, adding depth to its emotional impact. The song captures the loneliness of personal struggles and battles against inner demons in poignant lyrics. Compared to previous released single "Angel Of Darkness", this song has to be one of the heaviest songs I have seen from this band. The band has taken a different route from what they have released over the years and I am very impressed with how well this single was put together. Instrumentals then slowly transition into a progressive style breakdown, similar to what you hear in songs from ERRA, After The Burial. To finish the song, fans are delivered with a guitar solo performed by guitarist James McKendrick
"Following the Sydney date of tour we found ourselves in the studio on an off day, laying down the foundations of what would by the end of the day, become 'Empty.' I took the first words off the top of my dome, and screamed that chorus at the top of my lungs, leaving the take from that very demo the exact same as the intro in the final track you hear today. It feels suiting to return now with a song all about perception, not only by the public but also one self.. and it feels like true growth now feeling entirely realized and ready for whatever is to come."
