On Monday, November 4th, Enter Shikari takes the stage at Showbox in Seattle on their headlining tour with Yours Truly, and You Me At Six as the opening acts to kick off the night.

Nothing makes me happier than the resurgence of pop punk in the last few years. I grew up listening to Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance, both of which reunited in the recent years. If you’re at the grocery store and hear the familiar sounds of pop punk and female vocals, your mind immediately thinks of Paramore. I had no idea what I was missing because as band re-united, new ones formed. Along with the killer metalcore bands coming out of Australia, female fronted pop punk outfit Yours Truly joins the ranks. Vocalist Mikaila Delgado, guitarist Teddy Winder- Haron, and drummer Henry Beard combine the lightness of pop punk with a smidge of darkness. “Call My Name” has an Spiritbox feel on the verses and lightens up on the choruses. “Back 2 U” adds more punk to the mix and gets my headbanging too. This band puts out incredibly catchy tracks, a perfect warm up for the next bands to come.

“ You Me At Six” came from the pop punk era I grew up in. I heard inklings of them, but they were overshadowed by Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, and bands along those lines in the US. When I think about why I didn’t get into them back then, I realize it was a mixture of lesser access to social media and adhd. I listened to the same bands on repeat for years and looking back I feel totally robbed. This band has the perfect blend of vocals that draw you in and the emotions that tug at your heartstrings.
Vocalist Josh Franceschi, bassist Matt Barnes, guitarists Max Helyer and Chris Miller, and drummer Dan Flint have a lot of metal influences, and that their newest album even reminds of me of the Red Hod Chili Peppers at times. Nothing gets me going more, than when bands have guest performers so when Rou of Enter Shikari ran on stage, the whole room lit up. Sadly, this is the band’s last tour which makes it incredibly special that I got to experience them. I wish them the best of luck at not coming back for another round because after seeing them I don’t want to let them go. The bands I really stick to listening to are the ones that combine bits of my favorite genres together like the band headlining this tour.

I’ve known the name “Enter Shikari” since I was in grade school. I remember wanted to see them in 2007 at Project Revolution which my parents didn’t approve of. Almost 20 years later “Sorry, You’re Not a Winner” and “Mothership” never left my rotation, but those are only the tip of the iceberg for this band. If you listen to each of their albums they’re all different yet somehow connected. What really makes them special is the perfect blend of emotions, the songs I mentioned are intense and angry, but listen to “(pls) Set Me On Fire” and “It Hurts” and pretty soon you’ll be laughing and crying. “…Meltdown” has that same sort of anger feel, add a little dubstep and I’m doing a sort of awkward headbang dance. I LOVE IT.
After seeing them live, I think they are even more underrated than I thought before. The energy was NEXT level and I had forgotten that these guys are in their 30s. In a world where most of the bands I’m seeing are years younger than me, you’d have no idea they’ve been around since 1999! Vocalist/ producer Rou Reynolds, bassist Chris Batten, and drummer Rob Rolfe have been in the band since its inception. Rory Clewlow joined the band in 2003. It was like they took me back to a 2007 basement party and never left. I was shaking from all the adrenaline at the end and I can’t wait for what comes next. These guys are in it for the longhaul and I couldn’t be happier.
