The mid 2010s were a rough point for many pop punk bands that came up a decade before. You had the platforms that shaped and molded these bands like MTV, TRL, and Warped Tour going away. There was a new wave of younger bands on the rise glueing whatever eyes were focused on the scene away from the older bands. Ticket sales were declining left and right putting bands that were once in giant amphitheaters into 2,000 cap theaters and then not even selling these places out. Perhaps more so than anything, popular music just flat out stopped caring about guitar driven instrumentation. With so many reasonings behind the decision, one of the most popular bands from that generation decided to call it quits in 2017. Yellowcard is, was, always will be one of the most celebrated alt rock/pop punk bands of all time. A few years and one pandemic later, a shift happened in the alternative music scene. Just like the origin reasons of why many bands hung it up in the first place, there isn’t a single reason one can defer to, rather a multitude of many reasons. Whether it’s MGK deciding he wanted to make pop punk and gave that scene a number one album on the billboard 200 for the first time in years, whether it’s Tom Delonge rejoining Blink, whether it’s Tik Tok opening the gates of the scene to a younger audience as well as older heads missing their youth, there’s all sorts of things that made the resurgence what it is today. Yellowcard reuniting is not a good thing, it’s a great thing.Â
After a comeback tour, along with hitting major festivals such as When We Were Young, the band has wrapped up their first LP in almost a decade and is due out this October. In a stunning move, the band partnered with pop punk royalty, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. While Travis is infamously known for many other things, he decided to add producer to his arsenal a few years back, and after many hit albums he’s single handedly produced in that timeframe, he has now jumped on Yellowcards.
In addition to this exciting news, the band is pairing with Better Noise Music for the first time ever. The roster that they have may seem like an interesting choice considering it’s full of more hard rock acts like Five Finger Death Punch, Bad Wolves, Nothing More, and Sabaton, yet it always is exciting to see a successful band try something new in approaches like this when they clearly don’t have to. On top of that, not only is Travis the producer on this album, with Yellowcard only having hired guns for drummers and no official drumming member, this album features Barker drumming on EVERY. SINGLE. SONG.Â
Along with all of this news, the band has already dropped the title track as a lead single along with the song ‘honestly i’, two tracks that are sure to please fans of all eras of the band. William Ryan Key, lead vocalist and guitarist spoke on how ambitious they were ahead of this album's release stating that there was no point in even trying to make an album if they weren’t aiming to make the best album of their career. What they ended up with was 10 tracks all of which are sure to be bangers in their own right. One of the upcoming tracks titled ‘You Broke Me Too’ sees a feature from longtime friend Avril Lavigne, as well as the track ‘Love Letters Lost’ featuring Matt Skiba, lead vocalist of fellow punk rock band Alkaline Trio (& former Blink-182 member).Â
While Yellowcard is indeed back and better than ever, we are still awaiting some tour announcements from them. In the meantime, the band is hitting Germany and Brazil within the next few weeks for a large number of festival appearances, followed by When We Were Young in Las Vegas this fall.
