Who Are The Yagas?

A brand-new band has never taken over media headlines so fast. In this article we are going to discuss who The Yagas are, why they’re the talk of the community, and what their known future plans include.

To answer the big question, who are the Yagas? A lot of information hasn’t yet surfaced but what we do know is the band met in Woodstock, NY at the Rock Academy and the name was inspired by the Slavic folklore witch Baba Yaga that originated in the end of the 17th century. Band members include Renn Hawkey (keys), Jason Bowman (drums), Mark Visconti (guitar), and Mike Davis (bass), and none other than The Conjuring Universe’s own Vera Farmiga and lead vocalist. Now, if you don’t know, The Conjuring Universe is a horror franchise consisting of 9 movies in total. The first movie, The Conjuring, was released on July 19th, 2013 and is a story based on true events about a family who moves into a new home for a fresh start who eventually start to be tormented by an evil presence in the home. When the incidents in the home begin to concern the family, husband and wife, Ed (played by Patrick Wilson) and psychic medium Lorrain Warren (played by Vera Farmiga), enter the script.

Vera Farmiga has played the role of Lorraine Warren in 7 out of the 9 movies and states she intends to do so for the foreseeable future. Now even though the family in the movie is loosely based on a real family, The Warrens are in fact real people and in fact, the true Lorraine served as a huge source of information for movie writers to make the films as accurate as possible. They are famously known in US history for their work in paranormal investigative services including their involvement with the 1975 Amityville Horror investigation. Unfortunately, Ed died in August of 2006 and Lorraine followed in April of 2019, but Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga keep them alive via the roles they as they continue with the legacy the Warrens created.

So, it is no surprise that horror fans were completely shocked when hearing of Vera’s switch to music and especially the fact that it was a rock genre. Taking two communities by storm, Vera Farmiga debuted her entrance into music as the lead of The Yagas on October 25th alongside the release of their first single “The Crying Room”. The official music video was also released and is currently sitting at 403k views on YouTube in just 4 days. It is said that The Yagas are planning to release a full-length album in 2025 mixed by Bryan Virtue (worked with Deftones and 30 Seconds to Mars) and mastered by Emily Lazar (who has worked with Coldplay). With video elements of dark and moody landscape mixed with the smooth alt melody is appealing to a compilation of new fans and continue to reel in higher numbers as the days go on.

While people are shocked, they are loving the new possibilities of this band and the kind of art it can potentially bring to everyone. Vera Farmiga is taking the term “Scream Queen” to a new level, and we can’t wait to see what flourishes.
