Wacken Metal Battle USA Opens 2027 Applications With a Spot at Wacken Open Air on the Line

U.S. independent metal bands have a chance to find themselves on stage at Wacken Open Air. Unleash your talent! Applications for the 2027 Wacken Metal Battle USA is now open: unsigned and independent bands across the USA can enter the competition for the chance to fly the US flag at Germany's iconic Wacken Open Air. Applications are open October 1 to December 1, 2026.

The rounds will occur in several U.S. markets before the finalists meet at the national competition. 2027 National Final: June 19, 2027, at The Brass Mug in Tampa, Fla., as part of the Tampa Metal Meeting 2027 festival.

Competition is set to take place on the regional level for Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, the Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego and Las Vegas, while the Southwest will feature competition in Portland, Las Vegas and Seattle. Madison will serve as the host city for the Midwest.

New York and Wilmington, Del. The Southeast will cover Atlanta and Central Florida. Texas will conduct qualifying rounds in Austin, Houston, San Antonio and Dallas.

The overall winning band from the national final will secure a slot on the Wacken Open Air 2027 stage. This band will also win a professional backline, $1000 to cover flights to Germany and access to VIP Camping at the festival.

Wacken Open Air has already been sold out for 2027. Wacken Open Air will be held for the 36th time between 28 and 31 July 2027 in Wacken, Germany, more than 50 bands have already been announced – such as: Electric Callboy, Five Finger Death Punch, Helloween, Heaven Shall Burn, Halestorm, Dragon Force, Napalm Death, Jinjer, Knocked Loose, Kanonenfieber, Belphegor and Dethklok.

The Wacken Metal Battle USA has held contests across the country every year but 2020 and 2021. Past winners include Gannondorf, Mourning High, Cascade Effect, Fadrait, Mythraeum, Monarch, Voices of Ruin and Corpse Hoarder.

San Diego's Gannondorf reached Wacken Open Air after winning the 2026 competition through the national rounds. Gannondorf qualified for the Wacken Open Air festival by beating five other finalists at the national final held on 13 June at Brick By Brick in San Diego.

The 2026 finalists were: Fate Defined (Spokane, Washington); Nemesis (Houston, Texas); Gannondorf (San Diego); Ramtha (St. Petersburg, Florida); The Victorious Dead (New York); and Through the Oculus (Apple Valley, California).

The award was presented to Rod Kukla, Silver Lining Music, Martin Koller, Prophecy Productions and SPKR Media and Kelly McLauchlin, Pessimist at the end of the show.

For 2027, the participating cities will play qualifying rounds and city finals hosted by local concert promoters. The winning band in each market will compete, leading to a U.S. Champion being crowned.

The grand prize winner will travel to Wacken to participate with other national winners in the Wacken Metal Battle international show.

It's not just a local gig for any independent metal band: For the winner, the competition can lead to a spot on one of the world's biggest metal festival stages and the chance to fly the U.S. flag in an international showdown.
