At exactly 9pm on Saturday 31st of January 2025, the doors of the Torquay Hotel opened up and the fans eagerly awaiting the night's live music poured in from everywhere, filling the room quickly making the room energetic from the buzz of conversations and whispers and hopes of certain songs being played.
I was at the venue an hour early because I cannot read start times and just from the insanely loud soundcheck, I knew we were all in for a massive treat of bands. Boy was I correct, it was a night I know I would not forget anytime soon.
Taking the stage first and setting the tone for the night was Post-Hardcore/ Alt Metal group Post Heaven from Melbourne, Victoria, and although admittedly I had not heard of them before the show; that's the best thing about the smaller local shows, you end up finding new bands to obsess over for weeks after (Guilty). They made an instant fan in me, their stage presence was out of this world and their sound was unique. This is something that I am a big fan of, they got the room moving pretty damn easily. It was confirmed that I was locked in for a night of good vibes and heat from every band. Â
Next to take the stage that evening was Bloom. This is exactly what the Melodic Hardcore boys from Sydney did, Bloom’s energy as soon as they hit the stage was nothing short of GO GO GO mode. The band came in SWINGING and the room erupted in response. I've been a huge fan of them for a while now, my two favourite songs from them are ‘’The Service’’ and ‘’Cold’’. The band had fans singing along and you could tell the crowd was feeling the vibes these lads were putting out. Both of these openers really hit their mark with warming the crowd up for the headliner, hands down one of the best shows I have been to so far since the start of the new year.
Finally, the moment we have been waiting for, Trophy Eyes have taken the stage to close this lovely night. Trophy Eyes, punk rock band, formed in Newcastle, Australia consists of members John Floreani on vocals, Jeremy Winchester on bass, Josh Campiao on guitars and lastly, Blake Caruso on drums. Now, I've listened to the headliner, Trophy Eyes for YEARS now, and this was my first time seeing them play live. It was very exciting to be able to see a band I grew up listening to since childhood. I know pretty much every lyric to the songs. You can tell I am a huge fan since I can tell the start of most of the songs without any vocals. That's pretty insane, right?
Trophy Eyes is a band that has pulled me back from the brink of total darkness over the years with their songs and their music. It was amazing having to get the chance to see them play at such a intimate show at a local venue to me. This concert is definitely something I'm not sure I'll ever be able to put into words, but i will say, I cried many times while taking my photos. This band has been such a huge inspiration to my life and I could not be anymore grateful.
Every song just HIT, John is one HELL of a frontman and his delivery with the vocals was like everything had come full circle, people in the front row were screaming the songs back at him, some were crying and embracing their friends. It was such a special moment, such a special band and a performance i'll never get out of my head, it was such a beautiful thing to watch from the fans and even better being able to share that moment with them.
