Building up to their highly anticipated upcoming album, Bodies, Aussie rock stalwarts Thornhill gift us with their latest single, “Tongues,” released on March 7th. Thornhill is one of the hottest acts in Rock and Metal, with their Los Angeles headlining date selling out nearly two months in advance. Their most recent album, Heroine, was a drastic, controversial, stylistic shift from their highly acclaimed The Dark Pool. The singles leading up to Bodies have been from the same vein, and I could not be happier. Nobody does sex-metal better than Thornhill.
The lyrics of “Tongues” describe the constant push-and-pull of human nature, good versus evil, fighting against temptation and desire. Thornhill relates it to their relationship with heavy music:
"‘TONGUES’ explores the tension of being pulled between opposing forces—desire and resistance, surrender and defiance. In many ways, it reflects our own relationship with heavy music, the push and pull between being consumed by it or resisting its grip. The song’s atmosphere feels like an ongoing battle, shifting between aggression and restraint. Lines like ‘turning your tongue in two’ and ‘fingernails down the walls’ heighten this conflict, evoking the struggle to commit or break free”
Of the singles leading up to Bodies, “Obsession” has been a mainstay in my playlists and on repeat in my car. However, “Tongues” gifts listeners everything that they love about Thornhill, making it a worthy successor. The song features a trademark distorted heaviness, vocals that It washes over you, and a sexiness in its entire vibe that makes it difficult not to bang your head, dance, or hit up that person you shouldn’t. The music video for the single is gorgeous, and its directors, Jon Pisani and Jacob Charlton, as well as cinematographer Cian Marangos, created a masterpiece that elevates the track to another level.

In April, Thornhill will embark on their first-ever US Headline tour. The tour is a can’t-miss lineup. AVOID is one of the hottest bands in the scene, with the most fun you will ever see on stage. At the same time, Ocean Grove and Banks Arcade have quickly made names for themselves in the Australian metal world. I have witnessed Thornhill numerous times, and they have never disappointed and will never disappoint. So next month, put on your dancing or two-stepping shoes and join us here at Ultraviolet Magazine in the pit as we celebrate the release of Bodies.
