The Smashing Pumpkins have entered the world of The Hunger Games with “Black Stars,” an original contribution to the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The track is available now, offering another preview of the music accompanying the next chapter in the blockbuster franchise.

The soundtrack album is scheduled to arrive November 13, one week before the film hits theaters on November 20. Based on the bestselling novels by Suzanne Collins, Sunrise on the Reaping takes audiences back to Panem during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, where a young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, faces the deadly competition.

The song came together while Billy Corgan was working on a solo album. After the band received an invitation to contribute original music to the film, Corgan brought in producer Butch Vig to help identify a track that would fit the atmosphere and mythology of The Hunger Games universe.

The accompanying music video also draws visual inspiration from the film. Purple smoke features prominently throughout the clip, echoing the purple and yellow smoke seen filling the arena in promotional footage for Sunrise on the Reaping.

“Black Stars” follows Noah Kahan’s “Draw You Out” the first single revealed from the upcoming soundtrack. Additional artists rumored to be involved include Lizzy McAlpine, Kacey Musgraves, and Hozier, although further contributions have not been officially confirmed in the provided announcement.

Music has remained an important part of The Hunger Games franchise since the original trilogy of novels inspired a series of successful films. The earlier movies featured a range of musical collaborators, helping establish a distinct sonic identity alongside the series’ dystopian storytelling.

With The Smashing Pumpkins now contributing to Sunrise on the Reaping, the upcoming soundtrack continues that tradition as fans prepare to return to the world of The Hunger Games this November.
