British Rock Band The Last Dinner Party is back with their latest single, ‘This is the Killer Speaking’. The theatrical baroque rock track hit streaming on July 18th, with the announcement of their upcoming album From the Pyre following shortly behind.
From the Pyre will be yours on October 17th, releasing via Island Records. Their sophomore project will come out just short of the two-year anniversary of Prelude To Ecstasy, the band's highly awarded 2024 debut album that put them on the map. Similarly to Prelude to Ecstasy, it appears that From the Pyre has the intention of being yet another concept album, this time with darker themes, ones that the band describes as being raw and earthy.
"This record is a collection of stories, and the concept of album-as-mythos binds them," the Last Dinner Party describes, going on to say “The songs are character driven but still deeply personal, a commonplace life event pushed to pathological extreme. Being ghosted becomes a Western dance with a killer, and heartbreak laughs into the face of the apocalypse. Lyrics invoke rifles, scythes, sailors, saints, cowboys, floods, Mother Earth, Joan of Arc, and blazing infernos. We found this kind of evocative imagery to be the most honest and truthful way to discuss the way our experiences felt, giving each the emotional weight it deserves."
We can already see this imagery begin to show itself within the cover-art for the album and the additional promotional teaser. Despite heading down a darker path, From The Pyre still seems to capture the whimsy and medieval flair fans of The Last Dinner Party know and love. Just this time, instead of femininity, breathtaking portraits, and a hint of petrol, we’re seeing something closer to folklore, sacrificial rituals, and heart-wrenching tragedy.

‘This is the Killer Speaking’ serves as the lead single from The Pyre. It has this gorgeous blend of heavy-sounding verses with an upbeat 70’s rock-esque chorus that leaves you breathing out a sigh of relief. The bridge of the track is downright powerful, with Abigail’s vocals completely tearing through the piano build-up, leaving me completely jaw-dropped and covered in goosebumps the first time it graced my headphones. If ‘This is the Killer Speaking’ is this strong of a single, I cannot even fathom what we may be getting on the album later this year.
