The newfound king of yearning and tragic romance is back with a brand new single. On June 20th, rising pop-rock superstar Sombr released ‘we never even dated’, his newest addition to a series of heart-wrenching songs addressing the loss of a lover.
‘We never even dated’ differs from Sombr's previous TikTok radio hits, ‘back to friends’ and ‘undressed’, as it moves away from the concept of dealing with the end of a relationship and instead adds this new narrative of trying to get over a person you loved, but never dated. Through ‘we never even dated’, Sombr taps into these raw human experiences that often aren’t expressed through the lens of a young adult. Yes, there are plenty of songs that revolve around similar topics, but I find their meaning is often buried in unless poise and poetry. Sombr feels honest and transparent, adding this relatability to his songs, being able to translate his emotions in a way that perfectly connects with his younger fan base.
A critique that I’ve found Sombr faces often is that ‘the majority of his songs sound the same’, as he follows a sturdy song structure and a cohesive production style that’s easily recognizable. However, ‘we never even dated’ moves into sounding more rock-like, reminding me of the Arctic Monkeys, and maybe even certain Inhaler tracks. The electric guitar at the beginning sets this new tone immediately, ensuring fans that Sombr isn’t simply recycling the music that made him famous; he wants to continue trying to expand his sound, building a diverse discography.
With Sombr continuing to tease new music and possibly an album, I hope the artist experiments with this sound further. Something rock adjacent seems to suit his unique voice well, bringing out the clear and true passion for what he does.
