If you haven’t heard of Slayyyter yet, we’re going to need to fix that. The popstar first crashed into the scene in 2019 with her brash and electric self-titled mixtape. Since then, she’s been slowly carving a place for herself in the industry, releasing project after project, with each one being so visually captivating, with Slayyyter being a true visionary on those fronts. You can think of her like a Kesha type, a little wild, but uniquely put together.

Over the few months, Slayyyter has been slowly building up to the release of her fourth studio album, which, as of last week, finally has a name. WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA is due to release on March 27th via Columbia Records. It’ll feature fourteen tracks, with four of them already available to stream. Each one of these singles have already been largely discussed online, with people not only talking about the song’s structures, but the creative direction behind the single covers and music videos. It’s clear that Slayyyter is sparing no cost with this era, determined to make a mark and build this confident and recognizable branding for WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA.
Alongside the announcement, Slayyyter released the album's fourth single titled ‘DANCE…’. Based on the tracklist we got, ‘DANCE…’ is meant to open the album, which works perfectly with the song’s extended intro, as it feels like the intro to a DJ set- somewhat hazy, yet grounding, like the best has yet to come. Sonically, the track feels seductive, as if we’re slinking through the club under some low purple lights, stalking some type of prey that has taken the form of a douchebag man who you’ll rid yourself of once the night is done.

Margaret Farrell at Stereogum says the sound of ‘DANCE…’ is akin to French Electro and The Weeknd’s After Hours era, two comparisons that I couldn’t agree with more. Yet, there’s another layer to ‘DANCE…’ one that I can’t quite describe, but it’s something that makes the track incomparable to anything else on the scene. But truthfully, that may just be me noticing Slayyyter’s sheer individuality seeping through the cracks. Often, I find that emerging artists, if you can even refer to Slayyyter as such, considering her long history, always sound as if they’re leeching off of their inspiration, rather than feeling ‘inspired by them’. I don’t find this at all with Slayyyter, it’s something that makes her music feel refreshing, engaging, and fun.
Alongside the single, Slayyyter released a self directed music video for ‘DANCE…’, you can watch it below!
