Legendary New York-based hardcore band Shutdown announced their new EP “By Your Side”, which is set to release on January 17th, 2025 via Equal Vision Records. The six-song EP is marked by the same youthful intensity the band is known for, but is also inspired by a mature worldview and wisdom that only comes with time. “By Your Side” also transcends the boundaries of the hardcore genre while still keeping its roots, appealing to both longtime hardcore fans and those beyond the scene.
Along with the announcement, the band released the EP’s title track and music video. “By Your Side” as the lead single and title track sets the tone for the upcoming collection. The track is a positive, uplifting song that emphasizes the need for community and support, especially listening to those who are going through something difficult in their lives. Dedicated to those who are struggling with mental illness or have lost their lives to it, “By Your Side” conveys the message that everyone indeed has someone who is “by their side”, and that no one should be afraid to ask for help. The EP as a whole continues the lyrical trend of positivity and finding the courage to push through hard times. Each track focuses on themes such as the importance of community, self-belief, and persistence. In a world where everything seems bleak, these messages of optimism are needed now more than ever. Staying true to its title, “By Your Side” is a vital reminder to always persist when times get tough, and that things will get better.
“That positivity is just how we roll,” guitarist Steve DellaCroce summarizes, “because it helped us when we were angry teenagers. To this day, when we write songs, we write them for us and whoever likes it likes it, but obviously it speaks to a lot of people and it's helped us survive this long as humans. So it was essential to keep that message going with this EP."
“There’s a lot of hope on this release,” adds vocalist Mark Scondotto. “I really think that’s what the world needs right now.”
