After two years of dedicated work and the enduring legacy of their acclaimed sophomore album The Periapt Of Absence—which reached #11 on Decibel Magazine’s Top 40 Albums of the Year and appeared on numerous year-end lists—Indianapolis death/doom titans MOTHER OF GRAVES return with Profound Lore Records to present The Light That Keeps Us, releasing October 16th.
This release makes it clear that MOTHER OF GRAVES is committed to advancing their evolution as a fully realized quintet. The album thrives on the refined songwriting of guitarists Chris Morrison and Ben Sandman, the powerful backbone provided by bassist Corey Clark and drummer Don Curtis, and the evocative, poetic delivery of vocalist/keyboardist Brandon Howe.
Blending the raw aggression of death metal with the melancholic, romantic nuances of melodic doom, The Light That Keeps Us stands as a powerful, deeply human statement and a testament to the band's authentic devotion to their craft. Each track becomes a guiding hand, leading the listener through an introspective exploration of mortality, sorrow, love, and resilience. The band’s dynamic flourishes under the production of guitarist Ben Sandman, whose work at the console preserves a personal touch, removing the superfluous and highlighting what truly matters.
Visual artist Larisa Brechun masterfully conveys the emotional gravity of The Light That Keeps Us with her cover painting, offering imagery that mirrors the band's somber yet hopeful spirit.
Over the years, enlisting the legendary Dan Swanö for his mastering expertise has become tradition, but this time, an even greater contribution emerged: Swanö proudly provided guest vocals on the track “Wingless Soul.” This full-circle moment adds a unique and lasting mark to the album within the death doom genre.
“‘Through The Pale Shade’ is a lyrical tale of resilience in a faltering world and letting the hands of beauty be your uplifting guide through the darkest and most desperate pits of the self and soul. Instrumentally, the song bleeds a similar hope and despair within each note. We chose this song as the first single because we feel it thoroughly encapsulates the true and honest nature of our sound. From start to finish, it speaks well in terms of our identity that we’ve steadily grown into as a band; coalescing with our personal touches the heavy approach to things and melodies that feel dreamlike without sacrificing the wholeness of the song itself.” Says vocalist/keyboardist Brandon Howe.
