The 67th Grammys were an eventful night for Lady Gaga. Apart from her own performance at the awards, being a presenter, and winning Best Pop Group/Duo Performance, Gaga had something to debut of her own. During a commercial break for Americans, Lady Gaga telecasted the new music video for her brand new single ‘Abracadabra’. Around 15 minutes later, the track was accessible to stream digitally, and the music video can now be seen on YouTube.
Now Gaga is no stranger to surprise drops, as just last fall she released Harlequin to accompany her role as Harley Quinn in Joker Folie A Deux, but releasing a music video on Live Television is a massive way to kick off her new era. It's reminiscent of Beyonce announcing her Cowboy Carter era at the Superbowl.

‘Abracadabra’ is officially the third single off of Gaga’s MAYHEM, and has been deemed a thumping dance track that is reminiscent of her older works. From the second you hit play, you’re met with perfectly rhythmic drums, and equally in-time synths, and Gaga’s pronunciation of “abracadabra” perfectly scratches the brain. The remainder of the track hits just as hard and does so on any occasion. Model walking down the street? Dancing alone in your room or the club? Looking for a new addition to a DJ set? ‘Abracadabra’ is perfect for any of those situations, adding a level of versatility to the track that not all dance songs can capture
The music video itself adds a lot to ‘Abracadabra’, as it pulls elements from Ballroom Drag. Gaga kicks off the video in a gorgeous red outfit by saying “The Category is… Dance or Die” as she watches a group below her burst into their dance moves. Within Ballroom Drag, similar formatting occurs, with the judge announcing the category while others have the opportunity to show off their dances. Throughout the entire music video, specific movements of the dancers, or Gaga herself reflect what is seen within Drag performances. Although these parallels are not confirmed, Gaga continuously has ties with Queer communities, and has throughout her entire career, so this may be a way to pay homage.
The idea of it being a dance “battle” could also stem from the lyrical elements and music video of ‘Abracadabra’ referencing Good and Evil, Heaven and Hell. It begins from the first chorus, but we see it referenced in many ways within the pre-chorus as Gaga could be alluding to a void versus transcendence, and then very ambiguously, Gaga draws ties to Biblical themes within the second chorus. Within the music video, an angelic Lady Gaga in all white is battling the Red Gaga, with the two opposing teams of dancers being dressed in white and black respectively. With this single, there is a lot of speculation about the meaning, but at the end of the day, ‘Abracadabra’ is a dance track, and one of the best we’ve heard in a while
The Release of MAYHEM is set for March 7th, but for now, you can stream ‘Abracadabra’ wherever you listen to music.
