On Wednesday, August 20th, 2025, Canadian heavy music pioneers Kittie announced a significant milestone: the release of Spit XXV, a four-track EP commemorating the 25th anniversary of their gold-certified debut album. This collection features newly updated and re-recorded versions of four of the album's biggest tracks: "Brackish," "Charlotte," "Do You Think I'm A Whore," and the title track, "Spit." The EP was produced by Garth Richardson, who also handled the original sessions at EMAC Studios in 1999. Spit XXV will be released on September 19th via Sumerian Records, and a brand-new version of the title track, "Spit XXV," is available today on all streaming platforms.

Reflecting on this significant milestone project, Kittie’s passionate vocalist and guitarist, Morgan Lander, shares her thoughts: “It’s hard to fathom that 25 years after its initial release, and nearly 30 years since Kittie first emerged onto the music scene, Spit continues to captivate audiences. There’s something genuinely mysterious about why our debut album still resonates deeply with listeners, drawing in new fans and leaving an indelible mark on so many hearts. Re-imagining some of these iconic tracks for the 25th anniversary of Spit has been an exhilarating journey—both a joyful celebration and a testament to the enduring power of the music. It beautifully illustrates just how relevant these songs remain in today’s diverse musical landscape. We felt truly privileged to reunite with Garth, the visionary producer who helped craft our original sound, after more than two decades. This collaboration was a wonderful way to honor our roots while infusing these beloved songs with a fresh, modern twist, propelling them confidently into the future.”

Released on January 11, 2000, Kittie's debut full-length album, Spit, transformed the band from four Canadian teenagers into international heavyweights. The album achieved gold certification, with over 660,000 sales in the US. It became a defining moment for women in heavy music, as its aggressive sound and uncompromising attitude demonstrated that metal created by women could achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success during the peak era of nu-metal, which was largely dominated by male artists.

The original album Spit received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, which ranked the title track as #82 on their "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Songs of All Time" list in 2023. The album's influence continues to resonate with generations of musicians. For example, Serena Cherry of Svalbard has credited it as the reason she became a metal musician, while experimental artist Poppy covered the title track in 2023.

The Spit XXV EP marks a significant milestone for Kittie as they continue their impressive resurgence following the release of their critically acclaimed comeback album, Fire, in 2024. This album, their first new material in 13 years, reached #13 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart and #20 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart. Additionally, the single "We Are Shadows" became the band's highest-charting song, reaching #20 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. The album's success earned Kittie a nomination for the 2025 Juno Award for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year, highlighting their ongoing artistic evolution.

Reuniting with Richardson has been a nostalgic and revealing experience for the band, as they last collaborated with the producer during their breakthrough era. This reunion has allowed Kittie to revisit these foundational songs with 25 years of musical growth, while still preserving the raw power that made their music revolutionary.

Since returning from their hiatus in 2022, Kittie has seen a remarkable resurgence in popularity across various demographics. With 784,700 monthly listeners on Spotify, the band's fan base includes both longtime supporters and new listeners discovering their music through social media. Their performances at major festivals such as Sick New World, Welcome to Rockville, and Sonic Temple have showcased their enduring live power. Additionally, their successful 2024 North American headline tour reaffirmed their exceptional ability to command the stage as headliners.

ABOUT KITTIE:

When you discovered Canadian heavy music pioneers Kittie has a direct influence on how you see them. For those on board from the beginning with Spit in 2000, Kittie was part of nu-metal's explosive rise. Through later albums including Oracle (2001), In The Black (2009), and I've Failed You (2011), the band evolved into something far more sinister, viewed as a serious metal outfit. After a prolonged hiatus broken only by a 2017 hometown show and 2018's documentary Kittie: Origins/Evolutions, the band returned in 2022 following festival offers including Sick New World.

12.6 million career streams later, vocalist/guitarist Morgan Lander, drummer/backing vocalist Mercedes Lander, guitarist Tara McLeod, and bassist Ivy Vujic maintain that Kittie never broke up because it remains ingrained in their identity. Their 2024 album Fire, produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice In Chains), marked their triumphant return with renewed fury and unfathomable sonic brutality. As Kittie now pay homage to their past whilst also bringing it firmly into the present day, with the new Spit XXV EP, the new era of Kittie continues to blaze forth, illuminating the way as they take their rightful place as torchbearers for heavy music.
