Katie Gavin Hits The DJ Decks With Her Latest Single - 'Aftertaste - MUNA Remix'

Katie Gavin may be best known for her work as the lead vocalist and songwriter of the band MUNA, but as of 2024, Gavin has been working on a series of solo projects, taking some time to experiment with her individual sound. On October 25th, she released her debut solo album, What A Relief, via Saddest Factory Records before embarking on an intimate headline tour across North America that winter.

While she may know her way around an acoustic guitar, Gavin has decided to dip into the world of electronic dance music. Rather than starting from scratch, she’s decided to remix one of her What A Relief hits, breathing new life into the track. The indie-pop, slow, headrush of new romance song that is ‘Aftertaste’ has transformed into this spunky, spliced, and synth-heavy dance track that has adopted the title ‘Aftertaste - MUNA Remix’.

Although the remix includes MUNA within the title, this is far from a MUNA song, as the closest overlap it has is the band members in the credits and possibly the familiarity of the lighter synths littered throughout the track. Looking at both Gavin’s discography and MUNA’s, the remix may seem to stick out amongst the more emotionally charged tracks, possibly missing the mark with a small chunk of the fanbase.

Despite this, I think that the ‘Aftertaste - MUNA Remix’ is perfect for those who reach for the dancier tracks within MUNA’s discography, such as ‘What I Want’, ‘Crying On the Bathroom Floor’, and ‘Number One Fan’. The remix stands to be a reminder of Gavin's diversity as a creative, showing that logistically, she can tap into any genre she wishes and walk out with a solid track, something that cannot be said for all artists.

To celebrate her voyage into the EDM universe, Katie Gavin will be playing a select few afterparty DJ sets across North America after opening for Lucy Dacus on her Forever is a Feeling Tour. Gavin will be accompanied by her sister, Maddie Gavin, to create the curated ‘katiegavs x madgavs DJ Nights’. She’ll be hitting small venues in Brooklyn, Toronto, Nashville, and Chicago, with some shows already sold out.
