Jerry Cantrell Releases Deluxe Edition of "I Want Blood" As North American Tour Begins

Grammy-nominated musician and Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell has recently kicked off his North American solo tour for his newest record I Want Blood, and the start of the tour coincides with the release of the deluxe edition of the album. The new album can be streamed HERE, and can be purchased as a CD or multiple 2LP vinyl HERE.

The deluxe version of I Want Blood features spoken word renditions of all nine tracks from the original record. These reinterpretations also feature their own unique scores with contributions from several collaborators, including producers Joe Barresi and Michael Rozon, engineer Maxwell Urasky, Greg Puciato (Better Lovers, The Black Queen), Gil Sharone (Stolen Babies, Team Sleep), Rani Sharone (Stolen Babies), Roy Mayorga (Ministry), George Adrian (The Maybirds), and composer Vincent Jones. The spoken word releases also came with an accompanying animated video series with graphics created by Boy Tillekens, which can be viewed HERE. The new renditions are a stark contrast to the original tracks, filled with thunderous riffs and energetic solos. The compositions of the spoken word tracks give a more haunting, eerie feeling, and put an emphasis on conveying the deeper emotions of the lyrics.

I wanted to do something special and I’ve never done a spoken word recitation of the lyrics, and I thought it might be kind of cool to have it on the B-side of ‘Vilified,’” Cantrell mentions in an interview with Scott Lipps. “I thought maybe it needs some music or something, and I was sitting there with Maxwell Urasky, my demo partner. He’s a really talented musician, and he said ‘Let me mess around with it for a night.’ He came back the next day with that piece of music, and it sounded killer. I brought it in to Joe Barresi and he said, ‘Man, you should do this with all of them.’ I got this creative stew going of sending the lyrics out to people, having them come up with the music, and sending it back. We ended up with nine pieces of really interesting takes on the lyrics, but the music is done by creative partners of mine, and it has nothing to do with the real music, so it is truly a standalone piece.”
