Another week, another album release. But this time, were going to be talking about In Her Own Words, who they are, what their all about, and what is included in their newest album, Left in The Dark.
In Her Own Words is an American alternative rock band from LA that was founded in 2013. Their first album, “Everything I Used to Trust”, released in 2013 and included 7 original tracks like “Reverie” and “Losing Sleep”. The band picked up steam with their 4th album, “Distance or Decay”, which released in May of 2022 after signing with Thriller Records. Their most popular tracks from the album that really seemed to resonate with their fans were “Circles”, Lights Out”, and “Raining in Toronto”. In Her Own Words was one of the very first bands who signed with Thriller Records in the beginning and Thriller still describes them as a band who manages to fuse “elements of pop-punk, alternative rock, and emo, they craft music that reflects the full spectrum of the human experience, embracing both the triumphs and struggles of their artistic journey.” I was able to interview front man Joey Fleming a few days after the album release and when asked what kind of emotions are invoked when he sees crowds singing their music, he stated “It’s the best! Definitely my favorite part of every show is hearing a room full of voices singing lyrics that I wrote while going through something, and I love hearing stories from people about how a song has helped them get through a tough time”. Joey joined the band in 2013 from the underground music scene in Utica/Syracuse, New York. Bands guitarist Andretti Almalel then joined just a few years later; originally filling in for an IHOW tour, then in the studio while recording their 3rd album Steady Glow and “the rest was history” says Joey. “Him and I clicked so well from that first rehearsal”. And so, IHOW grew even more into the band we know and love today. As they grow, their music grows, and then the fans right along with them.
In Her Own Words released their latest full-length album, Left In The Dark, on September 16th of this year and fans are absolutely BUZZING about it. Within the first week, the album has received 220k+ streams on YouTube alone. Some tracks that have received the most attention include “Beg For More” (37k) and “96 Hours” (51k). When asked of the intended goals for this newest project, Joey stated “We wanted to make something fresh and new that lined up with our current interests, while also sticking to what we know our people will love. So, it was a challenge to really put what we wanted to do into words, and we started experimenting with new writers and producers which was such a fun experience.” This album has been in the works since April of 2023 with the writing of the first song “Practice Makes Perfect” and the band implemented a new rhythm to their writing and recording schedules. “Our strategy of doing multiple singles every 6-8 weeks is something we have never tried before, and it was fun getting to show people little pieces of the EP throughout the year.” Sounds like IHOW loves a good teaser track and fans are absolutely here for it! “This EP is hopefully going to slingshot into something much bigger and brighter and I’m very excited to see what that means for us”.
Joey continues to captivate audiences across the US with his powerful vocals as well as in other parts of the world. “Every time we go to a new country it feels like an achievement and gives me that childlike feeling. It feels like we’re playing our songs for the first time all over again”. And speaking of tour, In Her Own Words also recently announced their newest North American run with band Have Mercy and FLAKE that starts March of 2025. “Very excited to play the new songs in some of our favorite cities.” To buy tickets for their upcoming tour and to explore all dates, click the link below.
