Pop punk band Heart Attack Man recently announced their fourth full length album, Joyride The Pale Horse, which is set to release on April 25. Along with the exciting news, the band unveiled two new singles from the upcoming record, “Laughing Without Smiling” and “Spit”. Frontman Eric Egan shares: “With every song of ours that comes to life, I have a thought in the back of my mind that it could be the last good song we ever write. At the same time, in many ways it feels like we’re just getting started and have only just begun to tell our story. This album is the intersection of pessimism and optimism; firmly between life and death.”
“Laughing Without Smiling” and “Spit” both encapsulate the punk rock sound and energy that Heart Attack Man has become known for. “Laughing Without Smiling” is an interesting listen, combining spoken word verses and classic pop-punk choruses. As a song that touches upon the boring repetitiveness of modern life for the average person, the spoken word verses capture that mundanity and lack of enthusiasm for life. The choruses, on the other hand, show concern for that person and point out the unhappiness that they are trying to hide. “Spit” is an angry track that rebels against the escalating use of AI, especially in creative industries. It points out the absurdity of replacing real people with robots and AI tools, leaving those people without jobs while those in charge get to reap the benefits. In a time where AI keeps being used as an excuse for CEOs to save a quick buck, a song like “Spit” is very much needed to raise awareness of this ever growing issue.
“It gets into A.I.,” Eric mentions. “What does A.I. mean for the creative process? Is it the end of human creativity? ‘Spit’ is a tongue-in-cheek sarcastic confrontation. I don’t like the idea of everyone relying on robots more and more. It’s my snarky pushback.”
