Everyone's a Star on 5 Seconds of Summer's Everyone's a Star! World Tour stop at RBC Amphitheatre

On Wednesday August 5th, 5 Seconds of Summer (5sos) brought the “Everyone’s A Star World Tour” to RBC Amphitheatre in Toronto, marking their first time in the city since 2023, and their fourth time performing at Toronto’s famous Amphitheatre. Joining 5sos were pop rock sensation Haiden Henderson, and alternative pop/rock band The Band CAMINO.

The first act of the night Haiden Henderson took the stage at 7:15, starting with incredible pop rock tracks, with an emphasis on pop, which allowed fans of 5sos’ early work to get comfortable as they began to shuffle into the venue. Fans who arrived early enough to catch Haiden Henderson’s set were treated to an incredibly seductive stage presence that demanded to be paid attention to, and pay attention the fans did, as he played a cover of Harry Styles’ “Kiwi” early on in his set. Haiden Henderson’s on stage chemistry with his band is also not to be understated, while the entire crowd had their eyes on Henderson, he had his eyes on his guitarist, Bella Parron, crawling towards her to undress, and singing directly into her eyes fora notable amount of his set. He finished off his set with his most popular track, “hell of a goodtime” which felt fitting for his performance which was certainly one hell of a good time.

The second act of the night was alternative pop/rock band The Band CAMINO, who took the stage right at 8, with front man Jeffery Jordan joking to the crowd that they had 45 minutes to convince us of them, and convince us they did. The Band CAMINO felt like a headliner in an opening slot, with arena level hooks and alt-rock instrumentals that would please the fans of 5sos’ newest album. The band's chemistry with one another was subtle but not unnoticed, as they were certainly one of the tightest live bands, complimenting each other greatly. Band members Jeffery Jordan and Spencer Steward’s chemistry especially could be felt from the crowd, with both absolutely killing their vocals, often alternating between one another on every track, creating an incredible juxtaposition between a deeper and higher vocalist. With all these factors coming together to create an incredible live sound, I think its safe to say 45 minutes was just enough time for The Band CAMINO to win over 5sos’ Toronto fans.

Three years since their last performance in Toronto, 5 Seconds of Summer’s highly anticipated return to RBC Amphitheatre was preceded by movie trailers, preparing us for the live concert film of the summer. The band started in their pink limousine on stage as the show began, starting with “Act I - The Peak”, one of 6 acts to make up their monumental performance. With no lights on on the stage, the anticipation from the audience could be felt everywhere, and then the lights of the limousine lit up as the first notes of “NOT OK” from their newest album “EVERYONE’S A STAR!” started playing, hitting the crowd loud and hard and causing the entire Amphitheatre to explode with excitement as 5sos emerged from the limo. Continuing with tracks from their newest album, 5sos hit the crowd with drum heavy “No. 1 Obsession” before playing their classic 2020 track “Teeth” hitting the crowd with confetti as Act I came to a close,

beginning “Act II - The Fall”.

The second act began with Easier, which had the crowd jumping around and singing along as the lyrics flashed on stage, making it feel like the greatest karaoke performance of all time. It became apparent in the second act that the famed boyband had finally begun to embrace the boyband label, or were at least pretending to, as the screens around the Amphitheatre began to play clips of the bands highs and lows, turning the concert from a show to a movie. Later on a fan would present the band with the “Boyband of the Year” award, solidifying their place as boyband royalty there on stage. This bit was of course followed by their satirical track “Boyband”, again from their newest album “EVERYONE’S A STAR!”. This song began the end of Act II and helped lead into “Act III - The Yearning”, which featured my favourite track of theirs, “Ghost of You”, which as Act III would suggest in their yearning anthem. Some fans screamed their lungs out around me, while others cried during the ballad which finished Act III.

Then began “Act IV - The Breakup” which saw the screens come back on, portraying the end of 5 Seconds of Summer a few years ago as the song “Starting Line” by 5sos vocalist Luke Hemmings began playing, signaling the bands hiatus where every member began performing solo projects, as drummer Ashton Irwin played his "Have U Found What Ur Looking For?”, bassist Calum Hood performed “Don't Forget You Love Me”, and guitarist Michael Clifford played “enough”. Despite the band being broken up during this part of the concert, every member contributed to one another's solo performances here, leading to a fuller sound, proving that despite their incredible solo successes, 5 Seconds of Summer will always be better together.

Act IV ended and then began “Act V - The Rise” which started with the band performing their emotional ballad “Amnesia” followed by their cover of The Romantics’ “What I Like About You” which was voted on by their fans as their secret song of the night. As quickly a sit began, Act V ended, and thus began the final act of the night, “Act VI - The Beginning” where the band travelled back in time to perform their biggest hits from their debut album “5 Seconds of Summer”, featuring classics such as “English Love Affair”, “Voodoo Doll” and “She Looks So Perfect”. This seemingly concluded the concert for the night, however, as fans began to move from their spots, 5sos began moving through the crowd, and the lights and screens came back on as they were travelling through the audience performing “Everyone’s A Star” amongst their fans. Following this the band returned to the stage to perform fan favourite “Youngblood” which actually concluded the concert on the highest note possible, as confetti once again began to rain down onto the crowd. 5 Seconds of Summer have truly captured magic in a bottle with the 'Everyone’s A Star World Tour' portraying themselves on stage in a documentary, and proving that everyone on that stage is indeed, a star.
