On May 28th, Eminem teased his new song "Houdini," and just 3 days later, he released the official song along with a music video that sparked discussion among fans.
The music video takes on a more humorous approach to his music as it famously references Batman and Robin with Eminem taking the place of Robin and Dr. Dre taking on the role of Batman. The music video starts with the old version of Eminem stepping through a portal from 2002 to 2024 that follows with Dre calling on Eminem to “fix” the situation, just before the old Slim Shady and the new Eminem break into what can only be described as an epic battle on top of a rooftop before merging into one artist seamlessly representing the fact that Eminem is planning on going back to how he used to rap, while still keeping a modern twist. Throughout the music video, he references old songs such as ‘Without Me’ with lyrics such as “Guess Who’s Back.”
Although many fans have loved Eminems return, a few still have disagreed with some of his verses such as “If I were to ask Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me/ Would I really have a shot at a feat?” and “My transgender cat’s Siamese/ identifies as black, but acts Chinese” causing the most discourse. In the past regarding such accusations of being homophobic and insensitive, Eminem has expressed he thinks the discourse is funny, especially because he is not. The rapper hones down on this when he states in a past interview “I started getting people being like ‘Do you have something against gay people, dedede da’ and I thought it was funny because I don't.” Similarly, in Elton Johns's interviews regarding his and Eminem’s friendship, he has said “Well he was accused of being homophobic/ and I came out and supported the fact he isn’t.” Although some fans are expressing deep displeasure at some of the lines in the song, others love the silliness that follows the songs and bleeds into the music video, and even after the discourse they are still eagerly awaiting the drop of an album.
