Just a month after releasing their latest album, “An Insatiable Violence,” Canadian death metal band Cryptopsy have just put out a new single. But unlike most, this single is an eight minute medley of seven songs from their 1994 debut album, “Blasphemy Made Flesh,” aptly titled “Blasphemy Made Fresh.”
Along with creating a medley of the album, the band brought in guest vocalists six out of the seven songs they mashed together. These guests include Alexander Jones of Undeath, Johnny Ciardullo of Carcosa, Bridget Lynch of Stabbing, Ben Deurr of Shadow of Intent, Mallika Sundaramurthy of Emasculator, and most surprisingly of all, bluegrass artist Billy Strings.
The first two minutes begin with “Defenestration,” the first song on the record, performed by just Cryptopsy. It then moves into “Abigor” with Jones, then begins to jump around the album with “Born Headless” featuring Ciardullo. From there they go into “Swine of the Cross” with Lynch then “Gravaged” with Duerr. For the sixth part of this mashup, they move into “Open Face Surgery” with Sundaramurthy and Strings before ending the medley with “Pathological Frolic” with all the guest vocalists.
While most of the featured vocalists make sense, Billy Strings stands out, being on virtually the other end of the musical spectrum. However, Strings is a noted Cryptopsy “mega-fan,” and their partnership began when they were playing shows in the same city on the same night. Strings sent his team to give the band a cake, and from there a friendship was born.
This friendship resulted in Strings performing as a guest guitarist during a performance of “Open Face Surgery,” then later as a guitarist on the last minutes of “Blasphemy Made Fresh.”
"I was a bit nervous because I hadn't played heavy music in quite some time, but I got comfy on the track and I'm really pleased with the end result. Contributing to a Cryptopsy track is one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life. I'll always be grateful to the guys for trusting me with this great honor".
