Cavetown Releases 'Sailboat' with Chloe Moriondo

We made it only one day into January before legendary indie bedroom-pop singer, songwriter, and producer, Cavetown, decided it was time for their next, and most anticipated single.

On January 2nd, Robbie Skinner, better known under the stage name ‘Cavetown’, released their 5th single titled ‘Sailboat’ off their upcoming album Running With Scissors. The full-length album is due to be released on January 16th, and marks the first time since 2022 that a Cavetown album has hit streaming. You can PRE-SAVE or PRE-ORDER the project now.

Sailboat’ is wildly energetic, leaning completely into this hyperpop landscape. You can hear it in the synths, the way the electric guitar is utilized, and the general pacing of the track. Unless you’ve been keeping up with Cavetown through this recent rollout, you might not even think to associate Cavetown with this style of music, but that's the beauty of ‘Sailboat’ and the entirety of Running With Scissors. In a recent interview with The Line Of Best Fit, Skinner explains that they felt a little pigeonholed into catering their music to this teenage generational group that initially brought the buzz to Cavetown. Running With Scissors is still an attempt to connect with these fans, but also offers this expansion to Skinner’s sound and the Cavetown image. Travis Shosa describes the project as “Skinner at his most playful, delving into more elaborate production techniques, song structures, and genre mashups.”

There is a lot to love about ‘Sailboat’, especially with how all-consuming it sounds, but something that stood out to me, and really pushed for this article to be written, was the collaborative elements. ‘Sailboat’ features Chloe Moriondo, who is a long-term collaborator, creative partner, and friend of Skinner. Being a long-term fan of both of these artists, I’ve always seen them as this concrete duo, and I couldn’t imagine that you could hear of Cavetown and not Chloe Moriondo, and vice versa. ‘Sailboat’ is arguably the two’s best piece of work together as they’ve both grown into their musical confidence, bouncing off each other in a new way, yet keeping the same vocal compliment they’ve always had. I’m blown away by how much they have evolved the track as well, with ‘Sailboat’ initially being teased back in 2023 as this mellower electric guitar track, one that felt akin to what we’ve heard during the Worm Food era.

Alongside Moriondo’s presence on the track, Skinner had some help from underscores with the production. If you’re a fan of underscores, you can pick up on her influence pretty quickly. However, it doesn’t feel overbearing, as if you’ve heard the 2023 teaser of ‘Sailboat’, you’ll recognize that the flow and base guitar sound is still the foundation of the track; it’s simply the production that has been totally flushed out. On a recent Instagram post, Skinner shared “all my favourite licks and sparkles and stabs came from her [underscores] amazing brain and i wont let anyone forget it.”

To accompany the album release, Cavetown will be hitting the road for the Running With Scissors tour! Throughout February, you can catch Cavetown in Australia and New Zealand for Laneway Fest. Then in March, Cavetown will be heading back to the United Kingdom and Europe to play shows in cities like  Dublin, London, Berlin, and Milan. Opening for these dates is Dreamer Isioma, who is an incredible artist that I highly recommend all of you check out prior to the shows. For a full list of dates, pop-up events, tickets, and additional information, you can check the Cavetown website HERE.
