UK based metalcore band Caskets is back! They have released their new single, “Make Me a Martyr”. This song is the follow up to their album, Reflections, which was released in August 2023. They also released a music video for their new single which you can check out here!
The video opens up with a person cloaked in white wearing a white mask so we cannot distinguish their face. The lead singer, Matt Flood, states the opening lines “Break me down to nothing/Break me down/I’m Yours” to the figure. Then as the song kicks in, the video pans out to show the rest of the band. They are in a light room, and as they play the colors shift throughout. You can also see more of those figures hiding behind the band.
As the chorus kicks in, we see Flood being dragged off by two of the figures, screaming for help. In the next scene, he is lying on the ground, surrounded by candles, and bleeding from his hand. As the song continues to build, more and more cloaked figures enter the frame. At the breakdown, the lights turn all red. The song closes with more figures surrounding the band and as the song fades out, Flood is standing alone with a cape draped around his body.
When asked about the meaning behind the song, Flood stated this song is about a period of self destruction and personal turmoil. This song is “a cry for a real connection even if that means completely losing your own self-worth in the process of finding it."
Ultimately, this song is the perfect song for if you are dealing with a break up from a toxic relationship. When you give your all to someone and they give you nothing in return, it’s time to cut ties with that person and realize that you are enough on your own. Even if you are not dealing with this, this song is super catchy. I can definitely see this being a part of several metal playlists this summer. While it is a softer song with a heavy breakdown, this song is the basis of classic metalcore.
Casket fans have nothing to fear, for there is more music on the horizon. This is just a taste, as Caskets continue to evolve their sound. If “Make Me a Martyr” is just the beginning of what is to come, I cannot wait for this next era of the Yorkshire outfit.
