Brooklyn Duo SEX WEEK Are Ready To Be Your New Indie Obsession

There’s a good chance you’ve yet to hear of the art-pop duo Sex Week. A couple of weeks ago, I was in a similar position, but after seeing them open for Chloe Moriondo on her Oyster tour back in Toronto, I fell absolutely in love with the band, jumping into their discography headfirst. The pair of musicians, Pearl Dickson (Vocals) and Richard Orifino (Vocals and Guitar), are an insane match, as they bring this energy to the table that is raw and authentic but with this underlying power that is bound to make them the next big thing.

Everything about Sex Week feels a little avant-garde, maybe even standoffish, from their band name all the way to their live performances. Despite that, something is captivating and thrilling about Sex Week. The two clearly feed off each other, projecting a joint energy outwards into the world and effectively capturing listeners in a trance of dreamy vocals and garage-style guitar. Sex Week feels like this hidden gem, one that you might want to keep for yourself, but instead will show off to your friends, breaking off a piece so they, too, can see the sparkle.

Recently, the band announced they’ll be releasing an EP via Grand Jury Music on August 1st titled Upper Mezzanine. According to Spotify’s pre-save page, the project will be 5 tracks in length, with two already available for listening on streaming. The lead single, ‘Coat’, was released back in March, while the second single, ‘Coach’, was released this Tuesday.

‘Coach’ is a loose and dreamy track, one that has an acoustic guitar at its base with simple layered synths on top, and a light drum beat in the distance. At the forefront of it all is Dickson’s gentle vocals, with her voice ghosting over the track, as if she herself is accompanying you on your listening experience rather than being your guide. Once everything is put together, 'Coach' as a full song gives the impression that it belongs in an indie coming-of-age movie, one that follows the boring yet electric lives of a group of teens. 'Coach' is the perfect addition to any late-night summer playlist, as it's practically begging to soundtrack secret night swims at beaches or quiet conversations in a hotboxed car.

Alongside the buzz of a new single and EP, Sex Week announced they would be holding a celebratory release show for their project. The event will take place in New York on August 2nd, featuring performances from Sex Week, Comet, and Darla Dean Lewis. For all additional details and tickets, you can follow the link HERE.
