Bowling for Soup Dive Into “In Too Deep” With Reimagined Pop Punk Anthem

Bowling for Soup is back with another blast from pop-punk’s past, and this time, they’re taking on a Sum 41 classic. Their newly released reimagining of In Too Deep” by Sum 41 isn’t just a cover; it’s a love letter to a scene, a friendship, and a moment in music history that still resonates decades later.

The track continues the band’s current creative streak of reviving and reimagining pop-punk classics, following last month’s spin on Simple Plan’s I’m Just a Kid”. With crunchy guitars, punchy rhythms, and their signature tongue-in-cheek charm, the Texas veterans tap into the irreverent spirit that defined the early 2000s without sounding stuck in it.

The connection between Bowling for Soup and Sum 41 is as musical as it is deeply personal. As frontman Jaret Reddick recalls, the two bands first crossed paths back in 2000 while touring alongside Catch 22. What started as a shared bill quickly turned into a lasting bond.

“We instantly hit it off talking about Metal and drinking copious amounts of, well, everything,” Reddick said. “Oh, and listening to the cassette with 1000 farts they bought at a truck stop.”

It’s the kind of absurd, unfiltered anecdote that perfectly captures the era and the chemistry between the bands. But beyond the jokes, Reddick recognized something special early on. Watching Sum 41 night after night, it was clear they were on the verge of something big. By the end of that tour, the crowds knew it too.

More than 25 years later, that friendship is still going strong. For Bowling for Soup, revisiting “In Too Deep” honors that history as much as it celebrates the music. “It is an honor to be able to add them to this collection of Pop Punk covers we are doing. And what a freakin 'banger it is!!”

The release also includes an animated music video that leans into the cartoonish chaos fans would expect. It mimics the spirit of early 2000s pop-punk while staying true to the playful humor that defines Bowling for Soup. It’s another reminder that while the years have passed, the attitude hasn’t died.

Fans eager to relive the magic in person won’t have to wait long. This summer, Bowling for Soup will hit the road with long-time tour partners Simple Plan for the Bigger Than You Think: The Sequel Tour. For those who grew up blasting these songs on burned CDs and iPods, it’s more than a concert. It’s a reunion.

And if Bowling for Soup’s recent run of covers proves anything, it’s that pop-punk never really left. It just needed the right bands and the right friendships to bring it back.
