Anciients have been through a lot, but after years of self-reflection in the Canadian wilderness, they’ve come full circle. Seven years after winning a JUNO Award for their last album, the band is back with another nomination for their latest release, Beyond the Reach of the Sun.
"We're incredibly honored and excited to be nominated for a JUNO for our new record," says frontman Kenny Cook. "Win or lose, just being recognized on a national level is something we’re grateful for. It’s a privilege to be in the same category as such amazing artists, and we wish them all the best. See you in Vancouver!"
Anciients are up for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year, competing against Devin Townsend (PowerNerd), Kittie (Fire), Spiritbox (The Fear of Fear), and Striker (Ultrapower).
From the arena-rock power of “The Torch” to the swirling chaos of “Cloak of the Vast and Black,” the album takes listeners on a journey through crushing riffs, intricate harmonies, and deeply personal lyrics. Cook poured his emotions into this record, touching on themes of grief, isolation, and mental health struggles. Songs like “Is It Your God” explore loss and the crisis of faith that can follow, while tracks like “Beyond Our Minds” reflect on the darkness that many people silently battle.

Visually, the album’s cover art—created by Adam Burke (Nightjar Illustrations)—perfectly captures the themes of the record. With its sci-fi-inspired landscape and haunting imagery, it sets the stage for the sonic journey within.

Now, with a fresh lineup and a renewed sense of purpose, Anciients are ready to reclaim their place in the metal world. With Beyond the Reach of the Sun, they’ve not only returned but evolved, delivering an album that stands as a testament to their resilience and artistry. “The break is over,” says Cook. “We’re hitting the ground running.”

Beyond the Reach of the Sun is out now via Season of Mist.
