Australian alt-rock band RedHook released their sophomore record “Mutation”, produced by Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic), with assistant production from RedHook’s Craig Wilkinson, and mixed by James Paul Wiener (Underoath, Paramore). Stream the album HERE.
“Mutation” is a powerful, genre-bending album that is sure to cement RedHook as modern alt-rock icons. With a wide range of influences such as alt-pop, future bass and hip hop, metal, punk, and post-hardcore, “Mutation” takes listeners on a true musical journey that keeps them wanting more. The album’s ambitious production and memorable songwriting makes the record so unique to RedHook’s style, unable to be replicated.
On the album’s influences, frontwoman Emmy Mack shared: "With this record, we wanted to crystallize all the most unique parts of RedHook's DNA and then put that on steroids. Stronger hooks, braver lyrics, bigger production, wilder collaborations, bolder musical choices, just an evolution in every way. From moments of deep pain and heartbreak to moments of rage and defiance, to moments of joy, celebration and just pure fun, 'Mutation' is an authentic statement of everything we are, and we hope you don't get bored for a single BPM."
“Mutation” is stacked with features from a variety of acclaimed artists such as Alpha Wolf, Holding Absence, and Vana, who appears on the record’s focus track “HEXXX”, which is described as a “bad witch anthem” that gathers inspiration from alt-pop artists such as Ashnikko and Rico Nasty, while combining those sounds with heavy metal rage.
RedHook touches upon several topical themes throughout the album, such as sexual liberation and empowerment, misogyny, and narcissistic abuse; all themes and stories that are rarely shared within the scene.
Emmy adds, "At its heart, 'Mutation' is a record about growth, change and evolution. Not just when it comes to our sound but also to my own tumultuous journey as a two-legged chaos unit bumbling around on planet Earth. Since we wrote our debut album, I've spent a lot of time processing my trauma, working on myself, and just trying to be slightly less of a fucked-up mess. So this record also marks a big mutation in my headspace."
RedHook has recently finished a sold-out UK/EU tour with Dream State. Rock Sound has said "RedHook have firmly cemented themselves as one of the most dynamic forces in the modern alternative scene.". At this rate, RedHook is set to become a household name within the scene in no time.
